Yeah, I have a question about these guys. Everyone recommends them, but I took a listen to an mp3 here, and it wasn't that great. What do you think?

Magma are one of the most original and innovative acts in prog, but they're definitely an acquired taste. Most of their compositions are album length, so an mp3 extract probably isn't the best way to get into them. Magma Live - Hhai is available at mid price and is probably the best place to start if you want to give them a proper try.

I think that the real intensity of the band appeared on stage!!! try a DVD from them...however I'll grant you that their jazz is not a easy listening!!! Yes maybe try a live as Syzygy has said to you previously.

I prefer Weidorje or Magma's Köhntarkösz or Zao
Kawana.
The goofy language stuff and martian opera singers
are too much like Gongs goofy ball stuff. Not my bag,
guess theres a place for it be it seems to be lost in
science fiction.

I can recommend HHaï  aswell, great album.
Just got into Magma, so I don't know many albums yet, but the ones I have are all great.
Agree with Syzygy, I think they are an acquired taste, it takes a couple of listenings to really get into it.
The easiest album to like so far was Mekanic Destruktiw Commandoh

I agree...the easiest album to grab at first for "newbies", if one could call them so, is as you say Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandöh
