I avoid politics like the plague but what's happening in U.S. politics right now is easily one of the most important moments in this country's - and the world's - history. Win or lose, Barack Obama being nominated by a major political party for President is not just a breakthrough for civil rights or race in this nation, but for all people. What an exciting, almost unbelievable time.

oh David... I couldn't agree more... watched the convention tonight.. for one of the very ...very rare times.. I felt genuine pride in this country. It really was a breakthrough. Can't wait to see his speech tomorrow night.... want so badly to feel inspired... not choose between the lesser of two charlatans telling people only what they want to here.. who have absolutely NO concept of what it means to not face real day struggles and fears. I don't know if Obama does.. suspect he at least WANTS to understand.. .McCain though.. does not.. will forever respect his service to his country... but completely out of touch with common americans.
let's hope this is a beginning of something new... like Clinton was ..what seems like so many years ago. A President who genuninely cares about people... not just those who support him or agree with him.

Unfortunately I still feel that's what we have. Perhaps I'm just a lot more cynical than you. But getting this nomination was still a great achievement - going against the Clinton machine and winning was no mean political feat. So congratulations to Senator Obama.

I agree. my first time to vote, and it feels much like picking the lesser of two evils for me:
Do I want my toes cut off, or my ears removed...?
That kind of thing.
Still, it will be an interesting election.

So apparently a lot of young people like me like Obama as a symbol of change. What change occurred when he was in Illinois again?

It is amazing to me that with the state of our economy and world that the Dems thus far have managed to be only even with McCain who is a fairly weak candidate. Obama's lacks of specifics and gravitas are being correctly exploited by the Right. You don't win an election with flowery language and good looks. He'd better start forcefully laying out details starting tomorrow night, he'd better start taking apart John McCain, or he is going to lose and lose big. The Dems should CRUSH the Repubs this year, and they appear to be floundering as McCain appears to be picking up steam.
I don't know why but i really think Obama is gonna get blown out and the Right will continue the degradation of our country.

With this being my first election, I think it wasn't too hard to sum up both candidates for me: McCain- I disagree with him on several issues. Obama- I disagree with him on EVERYTHING. Thus, I pick McCain as the lesser of two evils. Although isn't that how it is every election year?

The only part of this I can agree with is that the election is going to be a blowout, but that's about it. And by the way, McCain is NOT, NOT, NOT a Republican no matter what the media says. He's a Centrist, a moderate, and as I said I disagree with him on several issues. Obama on the other hand is a Marxist, voted THE MOST LIBERAL SENATOR in the U.S. He's an elitist, he doesn't stand for the common American (at least McCain tries to), and he thinks every problem can be solved in this country by adding more government programs and giving people "free things". The last time I believe that happened was with Johnson's Great Society program, and those results were definitely spectacular, weren't they? Oh wait, it seems we still have poor people in this country, and many of them are fat. But how is that possible? The answer is of course because they squander billions of dollars every year THAT COMES OUT OF THE POCKETS OF AMERICANS WHO ACTUALLY WORK HARD FOR THEIR MONEY. This whole thread makes me sick. Obama has deceived many people lately. Hopefully enough of them wise up before November 4th.

Wow. An impressive, intellectual response to my argument. It's obvious you didn't pay attention to anything I said. Come back when you feel like engaging in an actual conversation.

guys, if this turns ugly I'll have it closed so fast yer head will spin

As long as the discussion remains civil, I don't see a problem. David (birdwithteeth) was just continuing the discussion and FinnForest didn't even respond in a decent manner. I don't see anything wrong with the discussion continuing in this fashion... but I agree with you if it goes beyond this point, then there's no point in continuing. Why not take this opportunity to have a valid discussion though? Why couldn't FinnForest respond in a dignified manner?

This is ridiculous. You're not addressing his argument at all. You have no argument (or you don't want to), so you're trying to make him look foolish. That's completely unworthy of any respect.
