The one without Fripp ... nah ... maybe not in terms of one for one musicianship (in which case the Fripp/Wetton/Bruford/Cross line-up wins) but for sheer orginality, potential and compositional strength it's got to be ...
Fripp McDonald Lake Giles and sometimes Sinfield

God there are so many to choose from!
Fripp, Levin, Bruford, Belew for me. But Wetton, Bruford, and Fripp (The Red Line up) came in a VERY close 2nd.

I like it as well, but KC didn't get really good till around the Larks' Tongue period IMO (although I like In the Wake of Poseidon which I bought today, and of course ITCOTCK is good, too).
I would also assume that most ELP fans like this line up the most.

All you really need is Wetton, Bruford, and Fripp, but Cross and Muir were an added bonus.

Again, restating what I wrote above.
I must say that Fripp's guitar is a black beauty (literally). I've always wanted one...

Aww come on people. It's without a doubt MkI . It was just
perfect. The multi instrumental talents of Mcdonald with
the beautiful voice of greg lake (and tight bass playing). And michael
giles drumming. Dear god people!! Bruford is good but giles has this
technique where he almost isn't going to make the fill but does it
superbly, kind of like he doesn't actually know what he's playing. but
you know what i mean. Incredible. And fripp is fripp, Like hackett with
a different name but not as cool.
Well Instead of writting that rubbish(especially the giles bit) I could have just said. Listen to ITCOTCK.
This post will no doubt be edited when I wake up later.
But The Beatles are better and so are Gentle Giant...and Foreigner(throwaway comment. ignore)
Post script: Mcdonald & Giles is a far superior album to anything
KC released up to red. Red's not better, just a contender. and thats a
fact.Jack.

Don't you just love people who try to give you their opinion as fact...
I've got the McDonald & Giles album... as well as a boot of the first Giles, Giles and Fripp... and (IMO) neither are as good as ITCOTCK. Of course, that could be due to the lack of a specific vocal god....![](smileys/smiley4.gif)

A tie for me, between the Fripp/Wett/Bruf (and sometimes Cross) lineup, and the stellar '80s lineup of Fripp/Belew/Bruf/Levin. Discipline is simply amazing.

See, and I think Discipline is one of their worst. I prefer Red and more so "Larks Tongue" to Discipline... but then you love that overly chaotic feeling in music...

Fripp/Wetton/Bruford with Cross and Muir - for sheer musical inventiveness, the LTIA - Red phase of King Crimson is unbeateable - just check out any of the live recordings from that era.

Any Crim line-up worked good for that specific era of the band. I can't imagine the Fripp/Lake/McDonald/Giles line-up playing songs from the 'Larks' or the 'Discipline' era. And so on. I dislike the Fripp/Wetton/Bruford/Cross version of 'Schizoid Man' on USA.
All versions of Crim had their own qualities that Fripp used at their fullest.
My personal fav is the 'Larks'/Starless/Red' line-up.

Nah. There is an abundance of energy and sections that flirt with chaos, but Discipline isn't an album by Magma. At the time, Belew and Levin were just what Fripp needed. He didn't want to just pick up where Red (another of my fave KC albums) left off, and it probably wouldn't have made a whole lot of sense to do so. Clean the earwax outta your ears! ![](smileys/smiley17.gif)
