Topic: U.S. and nudity Posted: September 10 2007 at 15:25 |
Sometime in the past (maybe recently), a famous 18yr old actress working for Disney took a 'naturist-style' nude picture of herself for private reasons. Someone apparently stole the pic and leaked it over the net, and some of the reactions really shock me. It's as if the poor girl has to be ashamed of herself for taking a nude picture of herself and some even saying that they will forbid their daughters to watch her performances due to that picture. Out of curiosity I checked it out and yea, it's the typical non-sexual naturist pic. It's none of their business and it's not her fault it got leaked, it's the leaker ... duh!
Why are so many Americans so ashamed of the human body? Why do parents prefer to show their kid a rated R violent thriller or terror movie rather than a much cleaner movie which happens to have a scene where you see a woman's breasts? Why is this naked picture bigger news than important science/politics news around?
"Good job son, you decapitated that guy with the axe. You're good at this game! oh wait, is that a nipple? turn this garbage off and don't play it again"
Slightly off topic: Sexuality. Why do parents try to protect their children to know about sexual education? They're going to learn eventually anyways, and it's better to teach it in school or in a family discussion rather than the kids learning in a very wrong way: (internet pornography, etc)

Would the country be better with no political correctness or the level we have now? I personally don't like PC but it sure deters a lot of trouble. People need to relax but the problem is where do you set the line? If we say the picture was no big deal, then the next one is a little worse and so on before there are no boundaries. It just isn't black and white and the religious people and the people who don't want anyone to ever be offended are going to have their say to the point where people just want them to shutup or go away so they give in.
If Disney does nothing, this should blow over. But will they be able to weather the storm? I hate that crap they put out but I have no beef with the girl and I am sure she is mortified with this and I feel bad for her. But then again, maybe it was a publicity stunt. Worse things have occurred.

I think you are mixing political correctness with social repression. The religious right in the U.S. is in general so blatantly contradictory it is hard to ever see tham embracing any sense of logic. I find it amusing that people who find themselves on a higher moral ground because of an alledged spiritual awareness become so deeply distraught over the human physical form.
And "slippery slope" is a logical fallacy. Artistic nude photos/paintings leading to hardcore pornagraphy is no more likely than choosing a firm matress over a pillow top will eventually lead to sleeping on a bed of nails.

It's a bit odd that they made a huge fuss over Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction" but are happy to send TV programs like Sexcetera over here, however I'm sure we have the same double standards as well.

oh yippie... nothing like jumping up on the soap-box after a hard days work hahhaha
that sums it up.... Just blame it, as I do, on the lunutic
right and their damn evangelicalism. It's ok to decry sin and
immorality for others.... but who is it that often gets caught with
their pants down.
This country has always .... from day one ... had a purianical
streak. Not to mention a healthy dose of hypocrisy. It's
fine to say what others can and can't do... as long as it doesn't
apply.. or affect them. Sex .. of all forms is natural... and
nothing is more natural than the human body. Lord knows
though.... I'll be the last person you'll see prancing around town in
the buff. I'd get laughed out of town... but I don't understand
what people's hang-ups are with sex.
oh well.

It's when it gets nastier and sadistic, like the rape scene in A Clockwork Orange, for instance.
There's a time and a place for sex in films.

And it should never involve Billy Bob Thornton. Didn't care for Monsters Ball in the first place, but he really didn't help. E

I question rule 34's nomenclature as a rule but celebrate its truth

The US is sexually retarded. I don't know if it's totally religions' fault, but I can't think of any other culprit now. Sex that is demeaning to any participant should be kept private from the general public, but still avaliable. And child porn and beastiality should definitely be outlawed, but other than that, no one should tell you what you can't do with another person sexually. As long as everyone's happy, go for it.
Nudity is the most natural state of being. The human body is to be admired, not shunned, unless in such cases when it is grotesque to look at (morbidly obesce, etc).

If we were meant to be nude, we'd be born that way .

ooo a good ol' us bashing type thread! love these
*cuts to bald eagle crying flame with "god bless america" playing softly and american flag billowing in background*
but yes, Americans, the first ones that is, were Puritans, which would be a fitting start to the nation
there are many contries (essentially all of them), with better sensibilities in the matter (to name a few the UK, and Japan)
because since nudity is so taboo in america, the ultimate counter-culture way of protest, and easy was to shock and disgust in america is nudity (anyone remember janet jackson circa the superbowl a few years ago?, I thought it would be the LA Riots all over again). Without people having it, it is in to display nudity and sexuality (despite the fact many of these so called protesters do it in a very blatant, untasteful manner)
sigh oh well, i'm off the ol' soapbox now so long!

The great irony of it is that America is home to the largest Porn industry in the world.

I never said it was, David. I was just using it as an example of the way sex shouldn't be portrayed in films. I doubt it would have got through the censors at all in the US. It eventually got banned over here though.

have you heard of prohibition? more alcohol was shipped and consumed in the 10 year period alcohol was illegal in america than essentially any other time in history
there's this somewhat pointlessly rebellious, hedonistic streak in americans.
and yes the booming red-light type industry we got should make us so proud...
the funny thing about the repression left is that though gay marraige is a hot-button topic in elections, it emits this awkward silence that just flows over the room whenever it's mentioned

Americans are prudes. Sex is a natural thing. I attribute much of it to religious teachings of the past/present. The Bible, in the old testament Garden of Eden tale, says to us that nakedness is shameful. Why? If were weren't supposed to be naked, then why are we born that way?
