There are "virtual" software packages of instruments for PC usage: example -
Native Instruments' products (Hammond B3, Electrik Piano, Synthesizers, etc.)
GMedia's products (Mellotron, etc.)...
+ others...

How do these work ?  Hover the mouse pointer over the "virtual" on screen keyboard then click ? (In this case how would you play chords ?)
OR... physically connect a keyboard to the PC and point the software to it ?

What are the good points  &  bad points  to this entire  approach  (i.e. instrument emulation via PC) ?

(Wanna know what the deal is before I dump $$$ into a new project)

I have the Arturia minimoog V software synth which is fantastic. Endorsed by Bob Moog himself.

You can either click your mouse pointer on the keys to play a note (or click and drag to rotate a pot, flick a switch etc.) but really you need a music keyboard. I bought the Evolution Ekeys 49 midi keyboard which just plugs into a USB port on my PC (no external power supply needed) and it's plug-and-play with the Arturia software - I didn't need to configure anything.

By the way, the keyboard comes with Sound Studio II and Music Teacher, both of which are synths too, and one of them - can't remember which, now - is not too bad as a digital piano synth.

reed, you cheapskate, just buy the bloody M-Tron - it's only £46 from gmediamusic.com

actually they have a good MP3 demo of the sounds on there too
