 Topic: Good guitar for $600?

I've been working all summer and managed to scrounge up about $600. Now, I need a nice guitar. I want a tone that's about halfway between Steve Howe and Alex Lifeson - Good for both rythym and lead. Preferably slightly jangly, as well *prepares for onslaught of Strat and Ric suggestions*. Slightly more expensive would be alright too. Fire away!

I would suggest the mighty Schecter Classic.
A great guitar(I own one) that is more than worth your dollar.
It's like a PRS basically, but won't break your bank.
Check out some harmony central reviews.

strat. cant go wrong with a strat. #1 guitar for me.
epiphones suck. might be able to buy a gibson dc classic. nice guitar, or a sg single pickup thing.
be carefull with ibanez. the axs42 is my dream guitar. looks like a sg but rounder looking. def plays better too. ibanez guitars have the best feel ever. but if youre into metal or whatever ibanez is a good deal
schecter is ibanez's main competer so what ever. the tempest blackjack is my choice.
ltd is my next choice for metal. bc rich, jackson, esp, suck. ltd has this kick ass tele-esque dc thing with a humbucker and a way cooler headstock than the tele (which looks feminie, no offese intended).

Most Epiphones don't suck yes the Les Paul Jr and G310 (bolt on SG) are terrible, but most of the others I've played are good guitars, obviously they're not as good as a Gibson or a Fender but in my experience they are often better than similarly priced Ibanezs etc
If you want something a little different you could consider a Burns, but good luck in finding one, they're pretty rare.
If you can find one a used Steinberger USA would also be a good buy, I've got one of the Far Eastern built Steinberger Spirt GU guitars and its pretty good, so the US built ones with better woods and electronics should be very good.

Ibanez is the only guitar maker that can put togethor a good quality instrument at an affordable price for a casual musician. The RG series with a flame top is the best instrument in it's class.
Epiphones are a terrible value they can make a good instrument, but someone is nuts to pay them the money they ask.
Fender really depends on the model. The American Standard series is good. The rest are very very poorly crafted.
Stay away from Jackson. I bought one instrument from them, I sold it a week later because of a defective bridge.
I own a Schecter C1+ guitar. It's a quality instrument. Very well constructed. At least it was when I was buying it. My Schecter bass and I didn't get along very well. It was sold over a year ago.
I'm a bass player, but I still play plenty and own plenty of guitars.

Epiphone Les Pauls are good, played one in a store. I'd recommend a Mexican Fender strat, though they are a bit over your price at about 1300 Australian dollars, not sure what that is in Canadian dollars. It is a great guitar, I have one.

Ibanez guitars are great value for money, but since most models are
produced in such large quantities, you won't get too much money for one
if you ever would think of selling it. Epiphone's Les Paul Standards
are good aswell, but their trade-in value is very low, just like with Ibanezes. For the
money you've got, you can get a decent new Fender. However, if you're after
a Fender, look at used guitars instead, as you can get a better model
for a price equal to or lower than the price of a new Mexico-made
Standard series guitar.

ok my bass playin friend, this is the only place where i disagree. all strats above the mexican standards are of amazing quality. the koa is a masterpiece of a guitar. the tone is astonding. its the only strat id pay for unless id want to go for high quality (think 2000-3000 u.s.).
that said. most other fender guitars arnt that good. the jaguar is my next choice; the 60-somthing remake with single coils...oh man that thing is nice...beats the hell outa that black humbucker one!
but teles mustangs and cyclones or whatever just dont cut up to the strat.

I'd go for a Fender Strat or an Ibanez S-model. I got my Ibanez used for a little over $700 and it's great. The fretboard is easy to work around, but I think the tone is a bit light for what I want, but I think that's more due to my lack of a very satisfying pedal. I want to get a Strat too, but that will have to come after a classical guitar.

Ok, for everyone who suggested a strat, how about a Highway One Stratocaster HSS? I saw one at my local store for $650, which I have.

These Fender strats are simply not versatile enough ... less than 24 frets, no locking vibrato system, no neck humbucker, sound always twangy, ... But if you don't mind these problems - go ahead!
