Topic: Recent "Fab" Neo-prog releases Posted: March 21 2006 at 05:15 |
I prefer Dark Matter to all.PALLAS made a very nice work - I've found it to be much better than Beat the Drum or Cross and Crucible.ARENA's CD is usual, but better than Visitor (IMHO!) or Contagion.PENDRAGON moved somewhere in unknown area...and there's no place for me ![](smileys/smiley5.gif) .
Ah...almost forgot...that CD with a weird boy on the cover...Mar...Mar...can't speak it right...rubbish,really ![](smileys/smiley7.gif) .I heard that band released much better albums ages ago...is that true?

Oh, well...
Dark matter is probably best of IQ - 3,5 stars
Marbles is as boring as ever - 2 stars
Believe is different from all other works of Pendragon and I like it more than the rest of their output - 3 stars
Dreams of men - is definitely best work of Pallas, and is a very good album indeed - 4 stars - my vote goes for it.
Pepper's ghost - worst work of Arena - pure unimmaginative commercial rubbish - 1 star - avoid

Heard all but one of those; IQ's 'Dark Matter' does seem the best of them; it's certainly the best I've heard of theirs yet...
Pendragon's 'Believe' seems less accessible than earlier works, but seems to be a more mature and dark statement than their other albums. It's my most recent prog purchase, and it's made a very good first impression thus far...
Marillion's 'Marbles', is as another member said, just boring to me. There's not much prog about it as far as I can see bar the opening track, and it lacks the punch that their best albums had. The fact that two songs were singles and one was a big hit says it all, really...
Arena's 'Pepper's Ghost' I wasn't fussed on at first, but it grew on me straight away by the second play- I'll give it another listen tonight, actually!![](smileys/smiley1.gif)

IQ Dark Matter followed closely by Marillion Marbles. Why do you think Marbles is boring?? I think it is such a fascinating experience. It must be one of the most interesting albums I´ve heard lately. You find beautiful ballads (Angelina), long epics (Ocean Cloud must be one of Marillion's greatest epics), heavier tunes (The damage) , etc. I love this album, but please do yourself a favour and get the two CDs version, if not, you may get dissapointed and moreover you won't experience Ocean Cloud
My vote goes for MARBLES

Not IQ. It's between Believe and The Dreams of Men, what true neo-prog should be IMO.

Dark Matter is awesome, the best album by IQ. ![](smileys/smiley32.gif)
Believe is OK but not great. I liked more the previous albums.![](smileys/smiley22.gif)
Pepper's & Ghost is a very good album , very underrated, but not as good as Dark Matter.
I aven't heard any Pallas and I'm still finding time to listen to Marbles. There are so many exciting albums to listen to lately!![](smileys/smiley29.gif)

Of the ones I know my vote goes to Marbles of that band you cannot pronounce...
Boring??? Listen to The Invisible Man (13:37), Ocean Cloud (17:58) and Neverland (12:10) this together is already half the album, and all are 5* tracks. The rest is somewhat less interesting, but these three epics are TOP quality tracks and alone merit the buying of this album!

I like IQ's Dark Matter a lot. Pallas's The Dreams of Men is their best and just about as good as Dark Matter. I can't stand Marillion or Pendragon, sorry. I like Arena a lot also, but feel their latest release really went downhill in quality. I couldn't wait for Pepper's Ghost to come out and spent the extra few dollars on the digibook. Boy was I dissappointed with this commercial mess. The only good part was the artwork. ![](smileys/smiley5.gif)

First: Let me tell you that I'm a fan of all these bands...
Here I go:
1) IQ: DARK MATTER (One of their bests, as The Wake, Ever & Subterranea).![Clap](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley32.gif)
2) MARILLION: MARBLES (Closely. The best since "Brave").![Clap](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley32.gif)
3) PALLAS: THE DREAMS OF MAN (Great album too. Like "Beat the Drum" & "Cross & The Crucible").![Big smile](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif)
4) PENDRAGON: BELIEVE (Very different work of the band. Good try, but I prefer other works; like "Maquerade Overture", for example. Maybe they have to feel more secure in this new direction of their music).![Confused](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley5.gif)
5) ARENA: PEPPER'S GHOST (I really like ARENA. Since "Songs From the Lion's Cage" to "Contagion". I like all his albums, specially, "The Visitor". But I'm a bit dissapointed with the last. Unnimaginative. Predictable. With this members, I liked too much more Contagion e Immortal. I know they can do it much better...)

I really don't get the hype over Dark Matter. It's good, but not THAT good.
