Topic: Rare Foxtrot copy? Posted: February 08 2006 at 07:37 |

Hello. I just got Genesis - Foxtrot in the mail today. It is a 1972
pressing from USA (Buddha). I just listened to Side 1, and I turn it
around, awaiting the beautiful tones of Horizons. Instead, the
mellotron opening to Watcher of the Skies comes on, and confuses me to
the point where I think I've gone mad. I doublechecked the vinyl to
make sure it actually was Side 2, but it was.
It turns out, the complete music of Side 1 is on both sides of this vinyl. And the strangest thing that really makes no senseis: when I compare the surfaces of the two sides, they are CLEARLY different. Side 1 has clear visible lines which separates the 4 songs, while Side 2 appears to be completely as it should be, with one line separating the first couple of minutes from the rest (As it should be , Horizons -> Supper's Ready). In other words, it looks completely like it should. Is this completely strange, and very rare ? Could I sell this to some crazy collector for several hundred pounds? Or is it not a big deal at all? Thanks |

I've never heard about anything like that. I'm not sure about its value, but if I had one, I wouldn't sell it.

I got a copy like that as well, don't know about the value amongst collectors, though.

I saw an Record Collector issue a few months backwith rare Genesis. I have afriend who bought it; I'll have a check this WE and tell you if it is mentionned.
Buddah was a real record label but I never knew they handled Genesis, Charisma being the label for North america and UK and Phillips for Continental Europe So you got Foxtrot without Supper's Ready? If you paid cheap for it, you might want to get another copy, but if you paid over $10, you might want to get your money back - but wait until I checked on its possible Collector value Could you send a picture of both labels? (catalogue numbers and everything) |

Since my camera isn't working at the moment, I'm afraid I will have to describe the labels for you instead ! Actually, I found a picture of the label here http://www.charismalabel.com/mhpyth.jpg (well, not the Genesis album obviously). The Catalog numbers are CAS 1058. The label on Side B is as it should be, with 1. Horizons , and 2. Supper's Ready (with titles to all the different parts of the songs). And seriously, this is the most absurd thing I have ever experienced - the grooves on side B are CLEARLY cut as though there is one short track (Horizons), a pause, and the rest of the record is apparently filled up with Supper's Ready.. How this is physically impossible when the music is actually the enitre of Side A, I really wouldn't know. But then again, I don't know so much about the technical aspects of vinyl pressing. Oh, and by the way, on this site http://www.mightyvinyl.com/genesis.html, which seems pretty reliable, the same pressing is sold at 200 dollars. Actually, after discussing with a friend who knows a bit about vinyl pricing (never heard about this though), I just put the LP out for sale on ebay, with 70 pounds as starting bid. I have no idea if someone is willing to pay this much for it, but I'll take the chance. Anyway, I appreciate any help from you ! Edited by erlenst |

Scanning it onto JPEG would've done it too well there is a good deal, you made!! You will be able to buy four pristine (mint/mint) original pressing of Genesis with all tracks present, with the price you get for that faulty one |

I have a Jim Croce compilation with the same sticker on both sides, but
the music is different on either side. An LP with the same music
on each side would be neat.

Foxtrot was "Exclusively Distributed by Buddah Records Inc." it says on the sticker. The label was Charisma, as you can see.
(sorry that the quality isn't better) I saw it offered for US-$200 here http://www.users.qwest.net/~morsborn/genesis.html Edited by Guzzman |

Buddah distributed cheaper (under license) versions. I still have a 'Nusery Cryme' non-gatefold cover, the colours are not very good either. Erlenst : has your copy a gatefold cover? |

I don't think that it has, if it's the Buddah version, as mine has no gatefold-cover and - as you mentioned for your "Nursery Cryme" - cover, Alucard - the colours aren't good. Thanks to Alucard I just realized that my "Nursery Cryme" is the cheap Buddah-version.

I checked up in that Record Collector issue 309 They only stop at thje first 50 most valuable (the 50th is still worth £350.00) and no mention of your Buddah misprint among those 50
However they give an address of a guy that has created a file called Genesis collectible. You can reach him or phone +44 1248 364847 (that is UK) |

Alucard - Nope, unfortunately no gatefold cover.
Sean Trane - Thank you very much. I can let you know if someone buys it from me over ebay. We'll see . If not, I'll ask this guy ! |
