 Topic: Tell me about this "new prog"

To be honest half of the new prog bands on this site that come up i've never even heard of before and never really cared less, I never really held out much for prog these days, never thought it would be worthwhile. Then I decided to buy 'Agaetis Byrjun' and 'Frances the Mute'!! I was amazed at how brilliant they were!! and ultimately deserving of the title "Progressive". So I now have a keen interest in finding new prog groups.
Anyway, I'd love to hear a few recommendations! Whichever record comes up the most I promise i'll buy it!!  I see that The Flower Kings (If that's there name) come up a good bit on the site.
I'm well acquainted with a lot of the classic bands, so any new groups similar to the 70s greats would be cool too...

^  Some of those names I always see but the names are so off the wall that they never stick in my head!!
Old school and new school I dont mind. What are "Porcupine Tree" like?? and "IQ"

the best thing you can do would be to play the MP3s on this site...that'll take you thru 2006!!
Porcupine Tree are a bit like Pink Floyd, kind of spacey...if you like that sort of thing, also check out Pineapple Thief.
IQ are neo-prog, so a bit like Marillion, in the Genesis tradition...but at the top of the tree in their particular field... if you like them, also check out Pendragon, Arena & Jadis.

I think I can get an album by Porcupine Tree called "The Sky Moves Sideways" is that any good??

If you're into jazz OR jazz/fusion, or just jazz influenced rock, please by The Flower Kings Unfold The Future. I've listened to it a billion times and I'm still not tired of it yet. It's simply amazing, as for the two new CD's you bought Frances... and Agaetis..., I enjoyed those as well. I would suggest;
Echolyn - 'The End Is Beautiful'
Magic Pie - 'Motions of Desire'
Spock's Beard - 'V'
Spock's Beard - 'Snow'
Riverside - 'Out of Myself' OR 'Second Life Syndrome'
Porcupine Tree - EITHER 'Deadwing' or 'Sky Moves Sideways'
Dream Theater - 'Scenes From A Memory Pt II'
And of course
The Flower Kings - 'Unfold The Future' for your own good.
These bands will give you a look into modern prog, that isn't "Neo", because I would never suggest anything from that genre, except perhaps Marillion. People seem to like Marillion these days...
The most 70's related bands I mentioned are probably The Flower Kings and Magic Pie. Some people argue Porcupine Tree and Spock's Beard are both 70's induced as well.
You won't regret buying any of these albums I mentioned. Goodluck.

both coheed & cambria and 3 are from New York.
for new british prog, check out RAIN, he's a solo artist from england,
his sound is similar to older genesis and gilmour-era pink floyd

winter wine, check out "Red Sparowes - At The Soundles Dawn" if you like Sigur Ros. Its not in the site yet, but is a new and promising post-rock band with a very solid debut.
