Personally, I think "Drama" has to be included in the top 3 Yes albums. True, Trevor Horn is no Jon Anderson, but he handles the albums' material very well. Writing, composition and musicianship are all superb on "Drama". It seems to me to be an extremely underrated album. Your thoughts?

I've listened to it once or twice. The material is pretty good, but it somewhat makes me feel as though it's a not a Yes album, because it lacks Jon's trademark vocals. It is a bit underrated, I suppose, but I do not believe it ranks among the top 3, or 5 for that matter.

It's under appreciated, sure, but personally I don't think it gets close to Top 3.

Actually though when I think about it, there are only a handful of studio albums by Yes that are really, truly great...

Close to the Edge; Relayer; Fragile; The Yes Album; and Going For the One; maybe Tales?.....I'd say Drama is next on the list....but there's quite a gap in quality between all those and Drama.

Drama though was a breath of freash air at the time - Yes were getting stale, and fell apart after the disappointing "Tormato". It was Chris Squire who pulled them back together as a musical force with the unlikely pairing with the "Buggles".

But Yes without Jon, always something lacking....

The First Two Yes Albums Are Great In Their Own Right. Ya Don't Need To Like Prog To Enjoy Them, But The Still Progress. Magnification Is Good Also...

1. Fragile

2. Close to the Edge

3. Tales from Topographic Oceans

4. Relayer

5. The Yes Album

They're in no specific order, but those would make my top five right now. I haven't heard Going for the One yet, which  I speculate to be very good as well.

I would put Drama after those albums, but I would agree that there is a gap in quality.

Good album, better than Going for the One and any later Yes album, but not remotely a top 3 IMO.

iI really like Drama, even more than Fragile, for example, but I consider it below at least three live albums and several studio albums: Relayer, CTTE, TFTO, The Yes Album and Going for the one

What do you think of such thought: do you think that if you have replaced Trevor Horn in "In The Lens" you would have gotten something in the vein of UK - I mean the rhythm and virtuosity in this song is just crazy!!

yet you still have time!

Good to hear these thoughts - a provocative and relevant thread!. I love this album - don't get me wrong, Jon Anderson is possibly my favourite ever vocalist, and I'm sure this album would be far better with him on vocals. But it's a cedit to the wonderfully varied and powerful music that it still ranks very highly. Unfortunately, once you start trying to compare it with other Yes albums it has lots to live up to. I'd have to put the whole Fragile to Relayer canon above it, but reckon it follows these over Going For the One, Yes Album or even Magnification (still growing on me strongly).

Yes, it is a good album but I wouldn't put it in their top 3. Everything from The Yes Album through to Going For The One are better. I would put it in their "Division 2" (or is it League One these days?) along with Tormato, Time and a Word etc.

I really like the two Buggles' albums, but Drama is my least favourite Yes record from the '70's. Great production, though.

Very good album but not top 3. There have been various Drama posts lately
you should probably check the search.
