Ever listen to a piece of music for perhaps the 20th time, and suddenly pick up on something that is totally, blatantly obvious? Well, I had one of those moments this morning.

On the bus on the way to work today, I was listening to The Tangent's live album "Pyramids And Stars". I'd just put down my newspaper, and momentarily concentrated on the music when, at the 14:25 mark of "In Darkest Dreams", a keyboard passage started which at first was reminiscent of the opening chord sequence of "Watcher Of The Skies". Interesting, I thought....hadn't noticed that before. Then, just a few seconds later (at 14:45) this passage drifts into a few bars of something else which immediately made me think "Hey....I know that!!"

At first I couldn't quite pin it down, but after running through it in my head a few times, I realised it was Yes - something from "Tales From Topographic Oceans". Further investigation nailed it down to track 2 "The Remembering", just at the 8:15 mark.

So why hadn't I ever noticed this before. It's not a little piece that's hidden in the background at all. It's right there...right in your face, and is virtually note for note. I think one possibility is that I listen to music so much nowadays as a background activity while doing something else, that I don't pay as much attention to the detail as I did 10-20 years ago.

Damn this short attention sp........Ohhhhh.....donuts......
