Topic: Progger Stereotypes? Posted: December 01 2005 at 16:56 |
Lets face it, pretty much every genre has a stereotype. Punks, Mods,
Metalheads etc. What are some stereotypical traits of proggers? Or are we
just a bunch of musicians and fans who keep it real and laugh at the crap
the rest of the world listens to?

The progger stereotype in the eyes of non proggers is a spotty sex starved teenager who spends all night on the internet discussing time signatures and symbolism..
The reality is very different of course: Very few teenagers listen to prog, apart from some of our distinguished members of course.

I don't know what the stereotype would be, or if there is one at all, but I am a very musically inclined teenager. I have strong opinions and beliefs when it comes to music. I have only met two other peole relatively my age who were seriously into progressive music. I have gotten some of my friends into a few prog groups, and they respect most of it even if they don't listen to it very often. Most however, don't understand the concepts behind much of what makes up progressive music. Arguing with them is pointless, because they simply ignorant in that realm.
Well anyways, as I said, I don't really think there is a stereotype.

You've got several stereotypes.. in metal for example, the necrowizards and the slipknotfans...
Proggers? - Dream theater fans; sex starved teenagers
- Dedicated musicians who just miss the spot, try to play something but should stick with listening to it
- Ze elitists, they wear scarfs during the summer and pay too much money for 1 vinyl record. With that, snobby about everything.
- the tony R types, rough jackets and bad jokes.
- the computer hackers. Knows stuff about PHP and other abbreviations (used google to find that word LOL) yeah like that. Neo, porcupine tree and stuff...
- The golden oldies.. The hippie back then, the beloved dad now (an good pubspoiler as an addition to that mostly..)
Could go on forever

I'm not sure if there is one. If there is a stereotype, it's
probably that we're all a bunch of nerdy, music elitists or something
like that.

Many people listening complex music (prog, for example) are interesting and intellegent.
But some are slightly arrogant, feeling themselves a part of elite, I guess because of the lack of sense of humour and self-irony.

My eldest son is a progger stereotype!!! He is a tall and handsome guy, Ipanema-style tanned skin, full of beautiful girlfriends, almost-graduated in social sciences and who thinks only about progressive music (when music is the matter).
Some people blame it on me...

It is a tragedy that for the most part, the common stereotypes for most serious proggers (and by that I mean people whose record collection is comprised of about 90-100% progressive rock, as if no other genre of music is worth listening to) are true. One look at that pathetic excuse for a Styx thread and you'll see that all the negative stereotypes spread out for you.
