Spectrum. While I generally do not enjoy the drum solos, Cobham's fine ability underlies everything that he plays as he compensates for all of the elements in each piece beautifully. This album presents a unique blend of quite innovative, powerful, and dense jazz-rock. Its captivating and timeless ambiance is consistently present throughout all the tracks. One of the standouts, Stratus, has seen frequent airplay and has gained universal approval, although it doesn't feature a pop-music-orientated tune. It got so much love even from those radio listeners who were never into the jazz-rock/fusion genre! Billy Cobham's solo debut is indeed a unique masterpiece, not due to its undeniable perfection, revolutionary impact, or astonishing qualities, but rather because it consistently delivers an exceptional experience. Every part of the album is engaging, and there are no tracks that one would want to skip.
The artwork doesn't lag behind the music either: its cover captivates with its abstract forms with vibrant colours on a black background, creating a mysterious yet harmonious visual that perfectly complements the album atmosphere. Do you know of any other album ever released by a drummer that is so widely adored yet a progressive masterpiece like this one? I don't!

Yeah, with so many great favourites to choose from, the only con-Fusion is in who to vote for, but it's gotta be Maelstrom this time around. ![]() It's a good thing David Axelrod wasn't in the poll too, or I would've been in real turmoil.

I adore, or love, love I might say, Eddie Henderson's Realization, Julian Priester's Love, Love and Herbie Hancock's Sextant, and getting into those and some other related albums were very important to me. I also recall that I wrote a much better review of Realization in 2009 (how time flies when you ain't doing much) and then lost it when I was about to post it, which was super annoying.
I also like Herbie Hancock's Head Hunters very much and Return to Forever's Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy and have very much liked Larry Young's Lawrence of Newark. And I enjoyed Spectrum. I went with Realization, but those three I mentioned at first could have all got the vote. Sextant, which i adored on first listen, is what set me on that Mwandishi and related jazz odyssey. Some great albums, BUT, where is the Mahavisnu Orchestra's Birds of Fire, one of Fusions short list of greatest albums? That would be my pick.
From the list, RTF. Captain Senior Mouse is one of the great all-time Fusion tracks. |

Birds of Fire have flown the roost, having run out of room to include Mahavishnu in the poll.

^ I've read before at this forum (from it's early days) that Prog Archives' Jazz Rock/Fusion was basically created for Mahavishnu Orchestra, and with it particularly in mind. While it's not a favourite of mine, it is commonly regarded to be amongst the greatest, with Birds of Fire, much like the phoenix, having legendary status. I actually used to like MO much more, but still really like Visions of the Emerald Beyond (1975).

I may have overlooked Mahavishnu for inclusion here as they're listed as a multi-national outfit on PA.

I know, but I was looking through PA's list of Jazz Fusion bands from the USA to fill up the poll.

^ I understand why you did it, and I am no expert on MO, but I had meant to imply (badly, as I am multitasking) that I guess that PA put it under multinational despite the band being founded in the US because he is from England. I would have given more details but my wife called me off.

Well, at least I'll know now to include Mahavishnu Orchestra in future upcoming U.S. Jazz Fusion polls.

Sextant gets my vote. Spectrum will probably win, and it's an excellent album, but for me Mwandishi era Herbie Hancock is pretty much unbeatable in the fusion category.
