Hi folks!
I operate a little website at www.darkstereo.com which reviews and interviews musicians, podcasters, writers and pretty much anyone with something to say about music of a "darker" variety. This of course includes prog! We've interviewed writers from The Progspace, musicians like Paolo Ballardini etc. So, if you're ever interested in a review or interview, please get in touch through the site. In fact... I'd really love to interview someone from the Prog Archives team... a founder or regular writer here? As a new member here, it would great to learn more about your fine work and have a friendly written chat Please reach out if this is of interest! |

Hi, (Warning ... slight editorial!!!) Hmmm ... I always thought that music was one of the biggest lights of my life! Have never really thought of it as "dark", and I differ when folks consider something "dark" and it is as fake as cardboard and plastic, and often its meaning is diluted .... but the ugly covers and such seem to make good money out there ... Interviews are nice, when they are interesting, but when the questions are not really about anything major other than some take on a show or song ... it makes the artist sound weak. I prefer the ones that have had the courage ... to ask Eno (for example) ... how does a sound, or idea ... become music in your heart? Or Robert Wyatt ... Different Every Time? ... and you know he is gonna pull your strings for not knowing what playing live is like! It's impossible to be the "same" since yesterday was a different day ... even though it is "similar" to its original version. But the ones that need to be asked questions would never get asked ... folks let Jim Ladd know, and he was massive in helping a lot of bands that we consider top 5 in Progressive Music ... his days at KMET and KLOS had a lot of stuff, but sadly either he was paid to not say anything, or we failed and he passed away ... and no one will get any idea about that time in LA, because folks think Radio Kaos is a joke! Guy Guden would be another one ... 50 plus years and a listing of so many bands and folks that had never been on the air anywhere at all ... and he still plays it. Most folks that do any kind of "radio" can't do anything past 4/5 minutes as a song! Archie Patterson of Eurock was a massive part of the original "imports" that made it huge in the West Coast ... his story is, mostly in a huge book that has all of his magazines going back to the beginning, but no one ever commented on Richard Pinhas's politics, and the guts to even ask it and the titles on so many albums. No one will ever ask AD2 about the orgies that created "Phallus Dei" that some folks still think it's just something else ... right ... and women were very subservient in those days in many communes in Germany! ... so you party, get stoned, things get weird and you party louder ... oh yeah, that's the album! Other than Guy, Paul and Myself, are the 2 folks that KNOW the most about Space Pirate Radio, but you will likely try for some one with a bigger name that will help establish and sell your name or periodical. Dark ... there is no dark ... we've been the ones that helped bring the light into the music and many of the arts! And that "light" was always ... TRUTH! And LIGHT is where life is ... check out the universe!

He was one of the highest paid DJ's in Los Angeles County. He was not very controversial, and he was great. He didn't politicize the music or question it, he just played what we assume he loved with zeal, and we loved it too. I grew up on KMET, KLOS, KPPC, and later KROQ. Born and raised in San Gabriel Ca. and moved away in 2007. You could hear GREAT music on the radio then. Those were the days, especially with KPPC... lots of prog. As for Dark Music many of the famous ones are dark subject matter... FoaBP Quadrophenia Tommy Even the Rolling Stones joined the Dark Side. The Beatles used "the force" mostly for good in the beginning. Edited by Valdez - May 28 2024 at 16:04 |

In many ways I agree with moshkito's thoughts here. Music has been a light in my life too! A blessing to explore and experience on many levels. Light can not exist without something to contrast against though... and stylistically speaking, it has always been the more subversive, critical and melancholy themed things that just grab my personal attention. It's a matter of taste of course, purely subjective! Diversity is what makes the creative landscape such an interesting place.
As for interviews (and reviews too), the site is just my way of giving something back. Expecting to "take" opportunities to promote work, and offering nothing in return just doesn't sit right for me. It is just a small way I can show gratitude to people who make music, often unrecognised or under-appreciated for their creativity and diligence. It might make no difference in the long run, or have little impact, but it is enjoyable... and every grain of sand on the beach is what makes the beach a beach lol.

Hi,
Thanks. Interviews are a funny thing. In general, I don't care for many of them, and if you want to check out some of the ones we have on the site, you will find a lot of differences, though in the end, not a whole lot discussing "the art" of the creation of the music ... which (apparently) is not important to fans, since they only care about the song, not anything about it. (So to speak!!!) But it is hard ... a really good interview would show a lot of knowledge about the art itself, and then the interview is about how it comes alive as a song, or another piece of music for the band. And this is hard, since the majority of folks doing "interviews" are (usually) fans, and they want their questions answered. Comparing this to an interview Guy Guden did with Robin Williamson (over an hour of fun!!!), it was tremendously historic, fun and crazy, and it ended up with him telling us jokes and participating in fun banter. Not sure how much you learn about the band and his work, but it explains beautifully how his Merry Band came together and worked so well at the time. The question is, do we care ... but an interview like that is 2nd to none, and totally far out. And enjoyable as heck ... and how he speaks about the old days, makes you feel like it is/was all alive, and you can still fell it all! That is far out and impressive to bring out of a person ... the only other person I ever met that could do that was Daevid Allen (Gong) who was so much fun to interview if you wanted to have fun ... but by the time you ask him for the 5th time how often he visits the loo, the whole thing is done and gone! It makes things very difficult for a lot of artists. And some of them do know that sometimes they got "lucky" with the right set of words or notes, and there is no explanation there, but, for example, you can try to interview Edgar Broughton, but he is likely to make you feel small accidentally ... in his advanced age, and pristine perception, how he has related to the world, politics, and the art of his music, is way too well defined, for any of us to be able to be clear on it, and then explain it ... try the album OORA, and see if you can come up with questions for Edgar ... and it won't be easy. A better question might be about the musicians that play with him ... they are not exactly beginners, and some of them have had a long time with him (Crane, and also his brother Steve), and are probably well suited to helping interpret Edgar's words! But, taking a "known" band, is, often, a lost cause. They are too famous to answer any questions honestly, and they want the star part up front, so we know what all this is about ... keeping the name/product up front, and many of these musicians have been taught how to do this to help. It almost ends up as if you are about to do U2, and guess what ... you have no "lead in" to ask a question other than how this or that song is about, and that is something that many bands don't really want to discuss ... it could be a hundred different things. In one of the films Neil Young is asked about OHIO and how it came up ... he couldn't answer it ... it was just there, and words were showing up. And while that's neat, this is tough for fans to read ... making it look like the only way you can be a part of the rock circus is if you have some parts of yourself "in the magic" ... and the fact is ... we don't, or we would be there! But a question about him being always centered enough to be "on point" would make more sense, but you have to be ready for that moment, since the question can not be popped out of nowhere ... it has to follow something near it to come out correctly. This is not easy ... and it begs that you check out that one interview og Gentle Giant by an Italian idiot ... who ended up LECTURING Gary Green on what progressive music was ... and Gary killed the whole thing ... "we didn't write anything!. We just played!" .... and there was no other question possible ... which was sad, since this would be a perfect time to discuss how they arrived at one point or another in so many places in their music ... and what inspired them to get that crazy ... nope, that Italian idiot was too stuck up to pick up the pieces and improve, and his interview is sad, and in pieces and cuts off various responses, because they weren't what he wanted to hear and GG was not interested in "progressive music" at all. It's very tough ... but yeah ... I would love to pick a brain or two, and musicians are not the only ones ... some are writers and we really need to pick their noodles apart better, so we can get a better sense of what the whole thing, and history, was about ... it's not just the song ... it's about their "living" day in and day out.

Hi,
A better "question" to ask ... IF I ever had the chance there is one comment I would definitely ask Robert Wyatt, and he might not even bother with an answer, or look at me funny, and then laugh his heart out. In his book, he has a comment about Syd Barrett playing. In the studio recording something and a guitarist looks at Robert and asks ... "what key is Syd in?" ... and Robert's reply is far out, but very scary and something that 99% of all musicians out there don't really know how to answer, or are afraid of "giving away" their secret (really bad joke, btw!!!) ... and that was this ... "he don't know the chords or the notes. He just plays!" ... and here is the spot for some questions, and 99 of us will not be able to say something ... we don't know of any other way music can be played/learned other than memory and circles of silliness and other "rules" that really hurt the idea of "what" music is than otherwise. How does someone play not knowing anything? Did you ask your child? How did they go from here to there? And to this day, 10 years later from reading that wonderful book ... not a single musician has ever stood up and even gave me, or any of us, any idea of how that could be possible ... was it color? (Hiromi) .... was it just the sound? (Froese/Schulze) ... was it the idea of turning this sound into something else, that ended up in another something ... !!!) ... or was it just some inner movie inside that person's mind ... I gotta a mouse and I don't know why I call him Gerald ... and so on, which is the more likely thing to find, and then you know that Syd was basically doing his coloring of the stories he found and saw in his head! That doesn't require notes or chords ... requires that he be able to find some sort of noise that fits and the combination of these 3 strings came out just right for it? You see? Now you are on the way to trying to find a starting point ... and hope that it sinks with the artist you are interviewing ... so you have something far out. Best of luck ... I do have some "interviews" but they were done in the "dreaming" and I will have these published (if possible) after I am gone ... I think that some folks are not going to like a few of them, but to me, they are clear as light!
