These last couple of months I've been (re)discovering Phil Manzanera's work: his solo work and group works like Quiet Sun and 801 (sometimes catalogued under his name, sometimes under 801...). I didn't pay much attention to his work before, but I must say that these rediscovery trips have been very rewarding. Quiet Sun's Mainstream album (all but...) is probably the prog masterpiece here, but I'm also much impressed by the 801 Live, and the earlier Manzanera albums (Diamond Head, Listen Now, K-Scope). Only recently stumbled upon his Firebird V11, and if this isn't another masterpiece, it is not far from it. In my humble opinion of course. What about you?

Phil Manzanera is one of my favorite guitarists. Too bad there were not more Quiet Sun albums. He also did some excellent work with Roxy Music and his solo albums have many good tracks.

Here is an excellent instrumental, the middle section presents a style that would influence others:

Liked and still like his first solo works including Quiet Sun, the 801 short lived project

I listen to Manzanera quite a bit and like just about everything he does. "Listen Now" and "K-Scope" are my favorites but he also did a very good trio of albums "6 p.m.", "60 Minutes Later" and "Vozero". "6 p.m." is probably the best of these.
He also quite recently released a couple of albums in collaboration with former Splie Enz member Tim Finn which are worth a listen.

Manzanera actually produced the second album "Second Thoughts" which was ostensibly a reworking of "Mental Notes"

I really like Diamond Head, 801 Live, K-Scope, and Firebird V11. Have listened to the others, but these are the ones to me that stand out.

For me Mainstream stands out from the rest, I just listened to it the other night. Love Roxy Music's debut as well my two favourite Manzanera related albums. Diamond Head would probably be next. I have 6PM which is very good. Phil relates in the liner notes that 6PM is closely connected to Diamond Head with a lot of the same musicians and that 60's vibe.

I had 801live on cassette a long time ago. It's probably one of the best live albums I know of. Yeah, it was that good.

Yes, I listened to the Manzanera/Tim Finn albums last weekend. A bit more mellow, maybe, but a very good listen indeed. Apart from the Split Enz album collaboration, you probably know that Tim Finn also contributed to several songs on the Manzanera albums Listen Now and K-Scope... I only discovered 6pm recently, but it is indeed a great album. The better one of the trilogy, maybe, but Vozero and 50 Minutes Later are also great listens. The albums as a whole are very well balanced and are a great listening experience from start to finish. Finally got the Quiet Sun album on vinyl (in great condition). Splendid from start to finish. If you don't know it yet, here' the first track, Sol Caliente: |
