I've noticed this for a while on here. A reviewer (or reviewers or even just raters) will give a brand new release a rating of five stars. For a little while these new albums will have really high ratings but then eventually they will drop off a bit (sometimes a lot). Do these raters and reviewers do this deliberately to bump up the rankings or to give albums more attention? Or are they somehow associated with the band or record label and told to give these new albums high ratings? Just curious. What made me think of this is that I just noticed it with the latest Arena album.

People tend to overdo it on new releases from a band they like but you normally find ratings drop down to a more normal level over time. I tend to have a few listens to a new album then leave it for a bit before listening again and reviewing/rating if I feel like, new releases need time to "bed in".

I think this does happen, so some do and some don't. The one million dollar question is how strong such behaviour actually is in quantitative terms, i.e., how many/what percentage play this game? Which is of course hard if not impossible to know because these people won't tell us.
