Topic: pointless threads Posted: October 10 2005 at 01:18 |
Ok... The forum is FLOODED with useless threads and polls. Some are sick and offencive. It was fun for a while, but this is just crossing the line. I think it's a good idea to close most, if not all, of them.

Long Live To Useless Threads!!!!!!

let's just stay above the moral melee prefer the sink to the gutter keep our sand-castle virtues content to be a doer as well as a thinker, prefer lifting our pen rather than un-sheath our sword

I would like to know who decides what is "useless" and what not. should there be a poll on threads, and would a two third or even a 75% majority of agreement be necessary for a thread to be branded "useless"? the point I want to make is that what may seem useless to one may not be useless for someone else. while I certainly understand some posts are in questionable taste and shouild perhaps not be subject of discussion, at least not in this forum, it is also very difficult to draw the line. I am generally of a rather permissive nature, but I certainly would not be pleased if, for example, someone advocated "rape" in here

I also believe removing "useless" threads do not give any kind of increase to the amount of "useful" threads. People just get offended, if the jokes they have composed whole day are deleted. Let's just ignore them, or enjoy them! If there's something violating site rules, that's an another issue. (IMHO, nearly forgot that)

A question: Who'll decide what's useless and what's not? YOU? Hahaha...
See, there
are several points of seeing a thing, you shouldn't be so radical. You
know what happens by doing something like openning a thread to complain
about other threads: You get attention to
something you consider useless, so why don't you just let it be
forgotten?
You are overreacting...

I like the way it is now...Tony R. just goes in to the thread, writes a bit of justification, and then pulls the plug on it---yanks it real hard, like he's starting a lawn mower!
This is the best way. Trying to get a majority opinion is completely impracticle. I support the idea of a philosopher king as leader of the website, someone who has overall power to guide it in a healthy way, keep it from degenerating into the usual South Park toilet-humor idiocy one finds all over the net, and sometimes here.

A Pole calling me Stalin! Ouch! You really know how to hurt a guy!
But seriously, Stalin was hardly a philospher king, more like a mafia kingpin with a bunch of goons armed with high powered weapons.
But, look, someone's got to ensure this site is interesting and intriguing to a wide group of prog fans, not turn into a free-form bulletin board for someone who wants to indulge in scatological prog "humor."
Also, re. your response, I'm not sure what "bothered you most sadly"...was it my reference to yanking?

^Indeed
I didn't mean exactly "useless", more "pointless". Technically any thread is useless, you're not gonna eat it, right?
Many members were annoyed by that, so this was supposed to be the place to express it.
