..."So there are really no unreleased Rush songs that were worth a damn....LOL

In this Geddy Lee interview, he discusses bass guitars, wine, charities and unreleased Rush material...

Rush was always clear about that, i.e. no "unused material" laying around.

I always thought those claims were kind of dubious, but they haven't changed their tune on that.  It just seems unusual to me that they wouldn't have created or completed any songs and decided...nah, that isn't worth putting on an album.  That would definitely make them the most efficient band in history.  Interestingly his comment is "any unreleased songs that were worth a damn", which maybe opens to there being some unreleased songs that they just don't consider to be any good.  Or maybe any good parts of those songs were utilized on other songs and therefore, none of the unused stuff is any good, in their opinion.

It's like this: Neil's lyrics were already there. If Geddy and Alex wrote some music that didn't pair well, just didn't jibe, they'd set it aside for something else and tweak it.

What Geddy means by "not worth a damn" is analogous to "not in its initial form." "Force Ten" was initially titled "Tough Talk." The song on the album went through some changes to arrive at the version we enjoy.

The guys gave us their best music. We got a couple fine solo albums, too. Neil had his jazz side, and all the guys lent their talents to other artists' albums, from Platinum Blonde to Vertical Horizon to Fu Manchu.

Then we have "Battle Scar," a collaboration with Max Webster. There's "Great White North."

And then there's an outlier like this, written by Geranios, recorded in 1981!

Vocals: Tony Geranios (Jack Secret) Bass/Backup vocals: Russell "Skip" Gildersleeve Rhythm guitar: Alex Lifeson Keyboards: Geddy Lee Drums: Neil Peart

I am sure there are some riffs they have on tape or hard drive that can be built upon, I have a feeling this is the easy part.
The tough thing is they all were in a band together, never apart, collaborating on everything as a 3pc band. I am not saying that all riffs were born as a group, I am sure many of it happened in hotel rooms, homes, personal studios but the growth and progression of that riff was done together.

The other thing is even if there was a riff that can grow into a Rush song......what about the lyrics? I suspect Neil did not write lyrics just to write them without a purpose in mind. Although, it would not surprise me if at some point the Peart family will release unpublished Neil documents that could turn into lyrics....

I for one am looking forward to the day Geddy and Alex return to the studio and record solo, together or with other bands. Alex has been clear on recent interviews he is not motivated to do anything right now and for sure Covid has made it near impossible.

Catcher, I got some funny trivia for you.

Alex played solos on two songs for Canadian pop rockers Platinum Blonde's third album in 1985: "Crying Over You" and "Holy Water."

The name of the album?

I was thinking on this and I think I did see this before and probably even posted it.  Old age just made me forget about it.
