Please consider checking out some of this music if any of it seems to be your bag, and vote.

Air - "You Make it Easy"

Bjork - "Isobel"

Broadcast - "The Book Lovers"

Cardigans - "The Great Divide"

Dubstar - "Just a Girl"

Electrelane - "Oh Sombra"

Mono - "Disney Town"

Morcheeba - "The Sea"

PJ Harvey - "The River"

Pram - "The Doors of Empty Cupboards"

Stereolab - "Cybil's Reverie"

If you have any other music that you want to mention similar to any of these, please do so.

Thanks for taking the time and trouble to post all of the relevant videos. My personal favourite on the list is Morcheeba, and talking of female vocalists of the 1990's, I just posted a Mostly Autumn tribute thread, featuring Heather Findlay on vocals from 1997 until 2010, and then Olivia Sparnenn from 2010 onwards. I also have a special fondness for Sharon den Adel of Within Temptation, and Tarja Turunen, the former operatic soprano with Nightwish.

Very nice collection of songs. Didn't know Electrelane, Mono or Pram - nice too, but neither will get my vote. Initially I thought my vote would easily be going to PJ Harvey, but imo she doesn't really excel on The River.
So, to make it easy, I go for Air, because I can float away on this song and her voice.

In a similar vain to this collection, I'd suggest Aimee Mann, How Am I Different (1999):

The razamataz is a pain in the bum

Normally I think multiple votes are for pussies, but this one has at least two I really don't want to vote against. Isobel is totally iconic, and I'm a big fan of Broadcast's The Noise Made By People album. I didn't know this one but it's great and should be voted. I also know and like some Pram, not this one, but it's up with their better ones I know. The PJ Harvey one is not bad either. As there are multiple votes allowed I'll throw some in before later coming back to listen to more of those I don't  yet know. Great selection!

I really like the Morcheeba a lot, a well as other Morcheeba songs. I haven't checked out much by those you listed. Of course I know that Mostly Autumn is very popular in PA.

I was questioning whether or not to do "The River", I was going to do "The Wind" -- both being the first songs that I heard from PJ Harvey.

I loved that track you mentioned. It's the first time that I've heard it and it is right on the money! It's a great mention for this thread. Thanks.

You sound like you swallowed Micky with that first sentence -- lol.   I don't do contests, and a significant part of why I do these is in the hope of exposing people to music that they might not have heard, and to get some recommendations along the way. Thanks. I really love "Isobel". That and "Joga" are my Bjork faves, and are what got me into Bjork. I'm glad that you liked the Broadcast track, it is a particular favourite of mine. I like The Noise Made By People very much, as well as Tender Buttons. "The Book Lovers" is the titular song from Broadcast's The Book Lovers EP from 1996.

the vocals in The Cardigans are silky smooth and delightfull, love their sophisticated and brisk jazz flavoured indie rock. Very good songwriting. I also like No Doubt.

Haha, yep. that's all fine by me, but of course if you don't want it to look like a contest, there should be no voting at all, and you can go to "top ten (contest) and lists (no contest)". Having to vote for a single one sometimes makes me listen more intensively to decide (I'm even stronger against "other" and "can't choose" options by the way). And if I somehow like everything I know, voting for them all is just superboring.

Furthermore, if only one vote is allowed (or only three as in the interactive polls), it is well defined what a vote means, whereas if multiple votes of any number are allowed, it isn't defined where the cutoff should be. Now I think it's fun to ask myself "what's my favourite?" but not so much "where do I make the cut for voting?". You see there are literally thousands of reasons... Tongue

Not that all this is of any importance at all... Wink

I enjoyed all of these songs.  The Air song was the only one I had previously heard.  I've no vote for a favorite however, since I enjoyed them all.  I was trying to rack my brain to share something in a similar vein, but aside from being songs from female vocalists that I enjoy I don't know that they have much in common with your grouping as both of these are from the 2000's.

Well, I would rather not vote for all of them either in polls, or many choices, that be boring to me, and when it comes to my own such polls I would rarely vote at all as that would tend to feel strange. I just often do multiple choice polls and say vote for as many or as few as you like, it’s not a contest, and the poll is merely intended as as an accessory to discussion, discovery and re-discovery. That’s my style. If others want to treat it as a contest for themselves, they can do that. I like to challenge myself in polls to pick a favourite, or just a few actually, but I don’t want others to fell like they have to choose one, I’d rather people decide that for themselves. When I haven’t done multiple votes others will express unhappiness sometimes. I like to leave it to the individual to approach things as they want. Really what I mean is I don’t pay much attention to what has more votes, I’m more interested in reading people’s thoughts and reading what they like, and any discussion that ensues. It seems every topic turns into a philosophical one for me. . Sometimes I do think, and have said, that I shouldn’t bother with the poll unless doing it as a contest and instead do it as lists . Most list topics are really boring to me as there’s commonly even less discussion than with polls I find. The interactive poll series is my favourite these days because it becomes a communal exercise and we all have input into the choices. It has some similarities to being in a book club where one reads a book as a group and then discusses it. We could do something like that with albums, I think grumpyprogfan was going for something like that with song of the week. I’d like to do song of the day, where each day a different person chooses a song and members of the forum community listen, comment, and discuss.

It is not of much importance, but it is of interest to me, so thank you. There is always food for thought when I read your perspectives, and reading other perspectives causes a change in my perspectives. I do try to be open-minded and open to different takes. I don;t like to tell people how they should vote or be overly didactic in telling people which approach they should take much of the time. I like a level of creativity, and people coming up with their own approach (I might argue with that person over the approach). ;) I do like to challenge myself as well, but that is more a contest for me than a contest where that which gets the most votes is the winner kind of thing (not a competition, of that sort is what I mean). The results do still interest me, as it gives me a gauge of what people like and don’t like, or as is often the case, know and don’t know. I often don;t like to tell people what they should do,and instead give them flexibility to approach it as they will. I often like to ask open-ended questions which causes consternation with some people, cause some people seem to want everything explained to them before they feel that they can approach a topic-- I'll be, come up with your own way, I like to see the creative process, but I digress.

I'm happy to hear about ones from the 2000s. Stylistically, I do have variance in the poll options. What I tend to like is types of Indy, quirky, art pop, jazzy, cool, baroque pop often with loungey qualities or psychedelic qualities, folk music, and Indytronica. I find a lot of what I like from the 90s and 2000s also has something of a retro 60s-70s exotica and loungey vibe. Much of what I like is on the Krautrock-related sort of side.

I enjoyed those despite being different from my usual kinds of fair.

A favourite of mine of those I listed is Stereolab, and this is one of my favourite tracks of the 90s. I like the nostalgic qualities.

Stereolab brings to mind Krautrock acts like Neu and Can at times and people like Serge Gainsbourg as well as some Velvet Underground....

I am doubtful that I know No Doubt (I might will recognise it when I hear it), but then I am an agnostic and a sceptic-- doubt comes naturally to me. ;)

I really love this twee pop one by The Cardigans:

It's like she could be singing about me, her wonderboy and beautiful one. ;) It has a certain innocence, and naivety I might say, that appeals to me. Simple and pretty.

Which reminds me of another singer still active into the 90s that I loved, Kate Bush. When I first heard "The man With the Child in His Eyes" (from 1978 and that remains my favourite Kate Bush song), I was like, wow, that's me. Then I heard Wow, and was wow, that's Wow, but I digress.

And Erase/Rewind is a fun more rockin' one by The Cardigans, but I do tend to favour fairly gentle music (I am first a folky at heart).

That's one I like very much. This is a really interesting song off Life, a cover of Black Sabbath's "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath", for those that don't know the album.

I discovered The Cardigans while living in Japan, along with Bjork (seemed popular there at the time). This was in the mid 90s.

I just noticed that The Cardigans "The Great Divide" (from 1996) has no note, I had kind of assumed before that was the one you'd be voting for Icarium based on your comments. Or do you not like that one?

I've now heard the ones that I hadn't heard (or was most curious about) before, and another vote is going to Mono. Very good one. Not impressed by the way with Air here; the one in the Interactive poll is so much better, and this one rather reminds me of why I didn't find them very promising when I got to know them around 2000.The best of the rest are PJ Harvey and Stereolab, as was to be expected from my already existing knowledge of these.
