 Topic: The Sweet: the B-sides

I dunno quite if the B-sides of Sweet singles count as prog, but they
are what got me into what was then (1970s) called heavy, or heavy rock,
which led me directly to prog. Heavy metal hadn't been invented
then, I guess. Anyway, I have a hankering sometimes to hear those Sweet
B-sides again, but can't find them anywhere... any ideas on where to go
for them?

They aren't anything akin to prog from what I've heard, and were more of a glam/ heavy rock band.
The B sides would all be on the new remasters of their albums. I don't have any of these albums- I have a cheap best of CD that does the job more than adequately- but they all had great reviews in music mags.

I know what you mean SA. Their early singles B sides were far removed from Glam rock. I remember a friend played me one once, and said, who's this then? My first response was "Deep Purple". I was astonished when I found it was Sweet, it was heavy!

The A-sides
were glam, sure, but the B-sides weren't. This is the point. I bought a
few singles after hearing them on Radio 1 and then began to entheuse
about the non-commercial B-sides instead

The Sweet's B sides are lost gems of hard rock/ heavy metal. The A sides were pure commercial glam but don't be fooled: those guys could PLAY! I would love to get my hands on them (the singles, not the band!!!!).

Yeah I just played one of these B sides on my compilation- 'Done Me Wrong All Right'- sounds a dead ringer for classic Deep Purple! To think this was the same band that did 'Co Co'!

I think you'd have a problem getting The Sweet on the archives!
I'm not really familiar with their B sides, but Slade had a few that strayed into pyschedelic/prog territory. I'm thinking of "The Man Who Speaks Evil" and "I Won't Let It Appen Agen" (Probably not spelled correctly incorrectly, if you see what I mean). Anyone remember those?

The Sweet wre only temporarily a glam Rock band and soon wanted to rid themselves of the image!
In their heyday the A sides were written by Chinn and Chapman,the hit makers of their day. The B sides were penned by Sweet however and they were great!!
The albums are good too, wiith definite proggy moments!
I have most of the B sides somewhere and I'll send them to you sometime Sonic!

Slade actually started as a psych/prog band I believe- called Ambrose Slade. They did an album for Fontana called 'Beginnings' that is worth a fortune.

Hey, Slade was the band that got me into listening to music for real,
not just sometimes turning on the radio. I started with glamrock, which
led me to heavy and then prog.
Sweet B-sides are really good

I got a Sweet album on vinyl today- 'Sweet Fanny Adams- and it's terrific!! Lots of Ritchie Blackmore style guitar work, Uriah Heep/ Queen style harmonies and thundering Zep-esque rhythm section, plus songs full of great hooks.

Fox On The Run sounds incredibly proggy to me.I loved The Sweet as a kid and recently wnet and bought a 2 cd compilation by them which has all those b-sides.I saw them live in 1980 without Brian Connolly and they were very loud.Stevie Priest had a massive beer gut at the time..not good for a 'pretty boy'!
btw I saw Andy Scott in my home town about 4 years ago when he turned up and sat in the audience for a Carl Palmer gig!

Yeah 'Fox On The Run' is my favourite Sweet song- one of the best rock singles ever, period for me.
