Storia di un minuto is my favourite PFM album, followed by L'isola di niente, then Per un Amico.
My favourite PFM tracks are "Dove... quando..." parts one and two, and "Via Lumière". There's so much great Italian Prog it would be impossible for me to choose a favourite. An Area, Franco Battiato, a Goblin, a Fabio Frizzi, Franco Leprino, Banco del Mutuo SOccorso, Le Orme etc. etc. So many great ones to choose from. |

I suppose it wasn't until the internet and the popularity of sites like this that it became relatively well-known (at least outside of Italy). Other than Goblin, I hardly knew any Italian "prog" acts until 2005, and those I found because of this site. Italian Prog got talked about more here around the time I joined in 2006 than it does now, but then the forum is not as active as it once was.

nah man.. not even the best one from that album... but greatest Italian track... toss up between Oro Caldo and Introduzione. while Introduzione may be the single best heavy prog track ever recorded..not just Italian but all prog... giving it to Oro Caldo which put the Italian in Italian prog. I dare you to walk down teh chaotic streets of Napoli and not have this blasting in your head |

I've only just recently beginning to explore Italian prog. So far I really enjoyed Le Orme's Felona e Sorona album, Banco del Mutuo Soccorso's debut album and, to some extent, Per un Amico by PFM. Btw. I went through the overall top 100, and I notice it includes quite a few Italian prog albums. But no krautrock?

Krautock is a different beast than most of the stuff on this site so it is no great surprise I suppose than in a list of most popular albums.. for it is not remotely a list of best or most important albums... you would be hard pressed to find much Krautorck.

It's interesting that at rateyourmusic under the progressive rock chart, it has three Can albums in the top ten. Faust is at 24. Neu is at 27 and 28. Amon Düül II is at 34. Faust is at 43. CLICK HERE FOR CHART
Krautrock does much better there -- different community. I love Krautrock, and don't care much for the charts at PA. It seems a very safe and conventional Prog list here, whereas my tastes tend to be more off-beat, and much cooler. Edited by Logan - April 18 2020 at 06:57 |

I know PFM and Maxophone from late 90's; in pre-internet era, a friend of a friend, older than us, had a huge collection of CD's from where we could borrow. There I met the aforementioned and the likes of Caravan, Renaissance, Triumvirat, etc. I prefer L'Isola to Storia.. My favorite track on L'Isola is "Is My Face on Straight". But I find these two albums even better: Edited by Machinemessiah - April 18 2020 at 09:41 |

Hey Micky, great video! it's a bit early but.. it's weekend! I cannot do without posting this other video I found recently; I'm a 70's purist, but the quality of this... amazing. As an amateur guitar player, for me Franco Mussida is an absolute hero. ^ Wow.. can't believe that hair! (it's him right? couldn't find the personnel list on YouTube, but sure it's him). And the drummer in your video would be Di Cioccio? Love his playing and attitude on this other : ) EDIT: had trouble playing it here; if not, here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=itCS3oKPrfM Edited by Machinemessiah - April 18 2020 at 17:38 |

Hi,
I'm not sure I can say anything about PFM that has not already been said ... between them and BANCO, LE ORME and a couple other bands, you have some magnificent music all around, and it deserves a lot of credit, and one other detail that is incredible ... the recent album by BANCO without the great late singer is FANTASTIC in Vittorio's hands, and one of PFM's latest is also a GREAT listen ... and I have not kept up with Le Orme, one band that will still be creating new material on their wooden boxes, I bet!
|

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

Per Un Amico is better than most albums by the big 6 prog bands. Only a select few surpass it. Doesn't matter if you can understand Italian or not.

Porg for short. My love of music doesn't end with prog! Feel free to discuss all sorts of music with me. Odds are I'll give it a chance if I haven't already! :)

damn skippy man.. it is never too early on a weekend if one ignores disapproving looks from tea-totalling spousal units haha. Yet Raff's coffee is so damn good I'll toast you with a mug of her finest. yeah that was Di Cioccio on the batteria and Mussida. Funny... last Friday we were comparing our plague afflicted domes of letttuce at the office and I brought that video up and said I ain't self cutting until I start looking like this dude. It might not have Sexy Stipe kind of locks.. but have no doubt he had no problem getting laid... then again all you need is a guitar and women will start losing the clothes...

My fave Italian group is Area - and their music is not similar to "Rock progressivo italiano".
I cant say which is the best Italian song... there are a lot wonderful songs.... And: I repeat: Generally, Italians dont understand the beauty of Rock progressivo italiano, Italians think that what comes from abroad is always better. |

I was meant to see Banco live in Bologna recently. Unfortunately that wasn't to be, due to the Coronavirus lockdown. I hope they come back when concerts are possible again. There isn't a weak second on their first three albums, and the new Transiberiana is astonishingly good, too. I can relate to them much better than to PFM for some reason. I love Area, they're weird and innovative, but I'm less often in the mood for them than for Banco. Franco Battiato has some genius stuff. However my favourite Italian album is this, which doesn't really sound like PFM but rather like a predecessor of the magnificient last two Talk Talk albums. This is utterly beautiful! |

well in all honesty.. none of the Big 6 of RPI sound remotely anything like each other. That was the point.. very much like Krautrock... and to a lesser extent Canterbury. One thing we as collabs noticed back in the halcyon days of this site... discovering a1 didn't necessarily lead to them going to a2.. but b1... c1 .. d1. Even if not musically similar the musical/social/political background in which these groups created their music tied them together. and decades later still did in the minds of todays musical explorers. Part of our jobs of collabs was not just to illuminate.. but educate...
