Topic: which genre of rock is the best? Posted: July 19 2004 at 10:52 |
I am very curious of how this poll will turn out. It may be hard for you to vote, because you may like more than one of the options, but just try to think of the one you like the best. thanks for voting!

Um,... BG35, this is a .... Progressive rock forum. Shouldn't we be able to vote for progressive rock or some of the sub-genres? Cantebury, Pyschedelic, Symphonic, Neo, Fusion, Zeuhl or Krautrock... Maybe I'm missing your point?

That'll be METAL for me. I used to love early early metal (especially from the NWOBHM, the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal): The Sabs, Priest, Saxon, Accept, Maiden, Raven, Diamond Head, stuff like that.

I guess it's Blues Rock that I listen to when Prog's not in the player. Stevie Ray Vaughan, Joe Bonamassa, Doyle Bramhall II, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Allman Brothers, Arc Angels, Gov't Mule and Warren Haynes..... many others.
Classic Rock: Who, Zep, Queen, Bowie...... I don't listen as much, but they still count.

Yep, I went for hard rock too... I even like a little AC/DC when I'm cleaning the house...or some Nine Inch Nails when I'm really trying to aggravate my neighbor..

I went for hard rock, because I've always disliked the term "Metal" to describe a form of music - I dislike labels in general outisde broad, sweeping ones.
Hence I like all forms of rock, AC/DC, Motorhead and Black Sabbath are long-standing favourites, with every classic rock band under the sun appearing on my list from time to time, from Blue Cheer (1966) right up to Rammstein, System of a Down and Killswitch Engage.
My preference is for bands with unique styles, in general, so I'm not keen on Puddle of Mudd, Cannibal Corpse, Slipknot or those other bands that sound sooo derivative (to my jaded ears!).
I also like Blues rock bands - especially John Mayall/Bluesbreakers and Savoy Brown, and some of the "FM" rock bands like Boston, Styx and REO Speedwagon (apologies to the Blues fans for putting these two factions into the same sentence - just trying to be brief!).
Punk is good - if we're talking about "proper" 1970s punk, although I will allow some of the later American bands like the Dead Kennedys and Black Flag and the "survivors" like the Damned, Citizen Fish and Killing Joke.
There is also much good "indie" rock - Radiohead are particularly good, although I find it hard to associate their music with the "indie" label, and I'm very keen on Muse, Jet and the White Stripes.
In short, I think rock is a great genre in itself, and it's all good (except the stuff I don't like!).

This poll sounds as if there is only hard rock, metal or punk, and anything else is "light". I recommend the creator of this poll to listen to some really heavy prog like High Tide - "Sea Shanties" or Magma - "Live" or Van der Graaf Generator - "Vital" or Hawkwind - "Electric Teepee", to name just a few, before asking such stupid questions.

"Lite rock", is that something like "diet rock"? Low calorie rock, or low decibel rock?
Sounds like rocking chair rock.
