The startling debut of the twin guitar dueling band is quite straight up hard rock with a heavy dose of Blues Rock boogie. What's your opinion of Wishbone Ash?

This album is a KILLER. I love it to death. From the boogie romp of Blind Eye, the ballsy Lady Whisky, with choice riffs and a heavy sound, even throwing in an almost Sabbathy riff before the last verse. The beauty of Errors Of My Way, where the twin guitars really create bliss, Queen of Torture is cool, I dig the lyrics (ha ha).
Side 2 is a Holy Grail - Handy is an out-n-out MASTERPIECE. Love the bass work, love the slow movement when the band kicks in, and it doesn't let up until the end. Phoenix, another phenomenal, epic track that just soars.
One of my top picks for debut albums.
Wow......that Handy.............such an amazing work-out.
Think I'll be spinning this today.

it's one of my favorite albums ever! It blew my mind first time I heard it.
All killer, no filler album, of all their albums I've heard and enjoyed (some I did not like, they have a huge discography anyway), the debut I've listened to the most. A flawless album, amazing musicians.

Wishbone Ash is my favourite band and although Argus is the album I like the most, the debut is excellent too. Like Tom Ozric, I also love Handy (I prefer it to Phoenix), and I think it's a real shame that they stopped playing it live after 1971. I live in hope that Martin Turner's band might perform it sometime, but I'm not holding my breath. When I asked about it on their forum, Martin said that it was a "bridge" between his old band The Empty Vessels and Wishbone Ash, in fact I have a recording of the Empty Vessels playing a shorter version of it, and as such it was a sound that Wishbone Ash moved on from.

If you like the first album, check out "First Light" which has alternative takes on most of the songs, plus a couple of unreleased tracks.

Tracks such as Errors of My Way, Lady Whiskey and Phoenix herald the dawn of a great band that would last longer than anyone would have expected.

Very interesting arrangements on "Handy". "Blind Eye" has that pure British Blues sound. Some Blues songs were interspersed between melodic Folk Rock oriented songs with a progressive edge. Their vocal harmonies on the debut are very impressive. For some reason unknown to me, I like the way "Blind Eye" is produced and dislike the way the rest of the album is produced. "Blind Eye" has piano and the high-hat seems to be more up front in the mix...which is great...but some other tracks distort and need to be re-mixed. You can always EQ it yourself. It's a great album.

Again, hats off to Handy. For me, an amazing peak, on what is a high plateau.
I believe the boogie Piano play on Blind Eye is courtesy of Matthew Fisher ( or one of the Procol guys....?).
Such a joy, this album.

This is comical to me....The first time I entered this website in 2009.. there were a couple of members stressing to me in a sarcastic way that King Crimson were not very good...and what that meant specifically is that they were just not good at any time , any decade, any past incarnation. Now it's perfectly okay to talk about Wishbone Ash. Not that there would be anything wrong with the Ash, but the extreme measures of saying a Prog band is useless ...along with a group of spineless people who do not defend K.C. , and now we have a Wishbone Ash grouping. I think that's funny.
