This was an interesting poll, with many well known artists/bands, some of whom I know not much of their later/recent work. I was pleasantly surprised by Joe Jackson, the jest in his music and the wit in his lyrics that I liked much in the 80s. Billy Joel's take on Leonard Cohen's song is really great too, but in the end, my three preferred dinosaur songs are: - David Bowie - "Dollar Days" - Van der Graaf Generator - Manuelle - Iggy Pop - Loves Missing

There were some great candidates once again, but there were many that were disqualified for me because of already knowing the tracks. So in the end here are the top 3
Bruce Springsteen - "If I Were a Priest" I really like the earlier Springsteen and this track is quite faithful to that style. It helps that it was originally written way back then. But this one still qualified because I hadn't heard this song before. Tv 2 - En mand og hans hund - This one continued to grow on me even more until it became a sure fire winner. Joe Jackson - Fool - Again this was a case of knowing the artist for his earlier work but never heard this track. He still has his style, but he has matured and has grown it, plus I love his signature keyboards. Runner up: Kaleidoscope - "Ghost Riders in the Sky" - Probably the best and most original cover of this old song. I had to really think about it, but it just barely missed the top 3. Friedman and Liebezeit - "182-11" - Really love the originality of this and it was definitely a consideration for the top 3.

As always, great candidates, lots of battles within for my very favourites, very little that didn't speak to me in one way or another, if indeed you are not mentioned here. Thanks again to all who participated, the "inventor," Lorenzo and this poll's author, Cristi: Here is how I ended up.
1. George: Pearl Jam “Dance of the
Clairvoyants” Of course I know of the
band (and we carried them on our buses all through the ‘90’s), but haven’t
heard much since except for some very fine Eddie Vedder acoustic tunes here and
there. Begins with percussion and bass
setting the pace. Eddie Vedder has a
very emotive voice, and a riveting stage presence. As with many Pearl Jam songs there is a
feeling of despair expressed with intensity.
In a very different way than the Bobby Plant tune, this would be a
contender for me. If you'd chosen Robert Plant's “Carry Fire," it would have handily won this for me, but your other choice also ended up as my favourite. 2. dr wu23: This is the one that I found myself humming afterward. The only thing that made it 2nd is that I prefer Eddie's voice to Joe's. Joe Walsh “Band Played On” Another great character from the music world, Joe Walsh. Also a very, very funny human being. This one starts with a sitar-guitar or at least the effect of one and tablas-type percussion. Displays his cynical view of much of misled humanity, the earth is dying and the band just plays on. I’d not heard this one and find it pretty darned good. I like that it’s a mix of kind-of-semi-world music with the wavery guitar effects and straight-ahead rock, goes well with the subject matter. 3. Cristi: I have been consistently surprised at how much I like this band outside of their big hit. A bit of a "straight, almost MOR production," brought it in at 3rd for me, rather than higher. A-ha “Living At the End of the World”
Another one from a-ha, who I have to say I really enjoy much more than I
would have thought from their smash hit, which did suffer from over-exposure,
at least for me. A lovely ballad-type
song with pretty orchestration and of course the fabulous singer at the
fore. A song of depth and sadness,
despite the feeling of elation in it.
Honourable Mentions Go To: Top HM to suitkees: Nits “The Electric Pond” Shadowyzard: Ajda Pekkan “Ben Yanmisim” Logan: David Bowie “Dollar Days”Mike: Billy Joel “Light as the
Breeze” If you woulda chosen differently (below): Lewian: If your choice had been, it would have been vying in the top 3 for me. Comsat Angels “Psychedelic Dungeon” JD: Same as with Lewian's and probably a surprise that I wasn't familiar with it before, Peter Gabriel “No Way Out”

I know two of these but it doesn't matter to me,..if it's good it's good and worth voting for. -BOC-Alchemist(Raff)- always been a fan since 1970 at college...nice return to form with this one-Joe Jackson-Fool (JD)- had not heard this one...hadn't listened to his last few...nice track...always relevant and on point -Kaleidoscope-Ghost Riders In The Sky(Nickie)- great version of a classic old country tune...perhaps better than any version that came before

We see that time passes because some bands, which are obviously the favorites of some of us, come back to compete. For example, I have already voted for A-ha, who if I am not mistaken had proposed Cristi himself, and for this I thank him because I had lost sight of them, and instead now I have found two excellent songs, this one here and the previous one that I voted. They are a band that I absolutely have to deepen. Same goes for Keleidoscope, freaks of the Sixties: fantastic band, which I have already voted in a previous Poll. Idem for Iggy Pop, whom I already knew, but only that of the best times, which in fact I voted. I exclude these three artists from my podium, since I have already voted them, but I reiterate that A-ha are a remarkable band and that Iggy Pop churned out great songs even as an old man. The Keleidoscope then I am absolutely sympathetic. In this round, these three groups collect the honorable mention. We proceed gradually towards the podium. The song by David Bowie, an artist I appreciate but don't love, impressed me very favorably, and he fought for a long time for the third place, so it deserves an honorable mention. Joe Jackson, an artist towards whom I am ambivalent, because it seems to me that his ambitions often go beyond his talent which, concentrated on a point perhaps would be formidable, gives us a truly aristocratic and eclectic song, which deserves the honorable mention. He should let go of his enormous competence and let himself go to inspiration. Speaking of the songs that I didn't have time to review, I see three great artists or bands, with a glorious past, The Who and Deep Purple, but also Joe Walsh: their songs are good, but the competition is fierce. We are coming to the podium ... Edited by jamesbaldwin - April 25 2021 at 13:57 |

MY PODIUM: Gold metal 1) Manuelle, by VdGG, absolute masterpiece of their maturity The other songs follow, from afar: Silver medal 2) Nits - The Electric Pond, a song that in my opinion has the merit of combining experimental electronic sounds with singing and with the melodic musical part arranged with pleasure. Good choice of Suitkees, which I always suspect is the same person as Christian-Lewian ... And here we come to the painful notes, the bronze medal: barely excluding David Bowie, I remain undecided between the classic but irregular rock song by The Anders, and the minimalist and instrumental song by Christian, which in itself lacks just what I appreciate in The Electric Pond, i.e. mixing experimental sounds with melody and singing, but after all I cannot deny that it intrigued me very much and therefore, although if I stick to simple musical pleasure, I should choose The Anders, for this time I reward Christian's coherence. 3. Friedman and Liebezeit - "182-11" / but very close is Tv 2 - "En mand og hans hund"

Is there a deadline to voting? I still haven't been able to sit down and concentrate on really listening to all the songs.

I apologize for dropping off the radar once again. I did listen to the songs in the previous poll, but none of them really resonated with me - which doesn't mean they were bad. Just a question of personal taste, I guess . Today I finally got round to listening to the songs in the current poll, and found a lot to like, though I will need at least another listen before I can vote. I was familiar with two of them besides my own nomination (Deep Purple and Bowie): for this reason, even if I like both songs a lot, I'll probably not vote for either of them. Of the others, I was impressed by the Joe Jackson song - quite progressive, I'd dare say! - and also the one by Iggy Pop.

I cast my first vote (Bowie) awhile back.
I’ve just cast my second vote (Pearl Jam). Still undecided on my third, and vacillating between three.... 🤔 |

I knew four of these and will not vote for them this time just to make my choice easier. That's the ones of Joe Jackson (one of my Big X anyway, was thinking of nominating it myself - still liked to read what Lorenzo has to say about him), David Bowie (what a monster of an album!), Van der Graaf Generator, and The Fall (very good choices though - I think I heard that Fall song just once, played live, and could well have voted for it but ruled it out to make the task easier). The honorable mentions are: tv-2, Iggy Pop, Kaleidoscope These three really hit me - I know all of these bands but not the tracks and am stunned how good they are: Pearl Jam - Nits - Deep Purple Edited by Lewian - April 28 2021 at 15:19 |

OK, it took me a while to listen and decide, but I've finally made up my mind and voted. It wasn't easy, because I found the runners-up as good as my top three picks. There was truly a lot to like this time around! As I said in a previous post, I ruled out Deep Purple and Bowie because I was already familiar with both songs. Here are the ones I voted for: - Joe Jackson - Fool: quite different from his Eighties hits (which were OK to these ears, but never huge favourites), and somehow reminiscent of some of the Cardiacs offshoots. Mind you, I tend to hear the oddest things when I listen to music . - Iggy Pop - Loves Missing: I can't say I am very familiar with his older stuff, but this relatively sedate yet haunting song really impressed me. - The Fall - Mountain Energei: another famous band I am not terribly familiar with, but this song hit all the right buttons with its stylish post-punk vibe. Runners-up: Friedman & Liebezeit: anything with Jaki on cannot be anything but excellent; Kaleidoscope: a dark, slo-mo take on a country classic; Pearl Jam: I just love Eddie Vedder's voice. Honourable mentions: VDGG and Nits. Well done, everyone! Looking forward to the next one. |
