There's a polish band that fits this description though it's not prog. It's called Sweet Noise. ![]() |

There's Redshift, but it isn't related to decibel levels...

What does Pythagoras have to do with decibels? Or paradoxes?

There's something called "Pythagoras' comma" (or something like that). I don't know what does it mean, it is said that it is a paradox related to sounds. I found it searching in Google for "paradox sound level" (not in English, however...)
I never pretended that this can be a correct answer though... Edited by Fassbinder - August 26 2007 at 20:43 |

The Pythagorean Comma isn't a paradox, it's a problem that occurs when dealing with just-intoned tuning systems. A Pythagorean Comma is the difference between 12 fifths (a fifth is a ratio 3:2) and 7 octaves (an octave is a ratio of 2:1). Equal temperament fixes the problem of commas by fudging the intervals a little bit (a fifth is now a 2^(7/12):1). It eliminates the comma problems, but reduces the "purity" of the tone.
As to the riddle at hand, I have no idea. |
