Well...it was a line in the song Born To Be Wild referring to the sound of hogs/motorcycles.....personally I don't think Steppenwolf was a metal band or even a father of metal.....a great band at one time nevertheless.

Blue Oyster Cult used to do a cover of "Born to be Wild" though my fave Steppenwolf song was "Magic Carpet Ride"...they had a great hard rock organ sound but I never considered them metal of any kind.

I think I have a version of that by BOC on one of their remastered cd's....Magic Carpet was my favorite too by Steppenwolf. I saw BOC recently near Valparaiso University in Indiana ...sadly they did not do Born To Be Wild.

I think some of us are forgetting that Metal and Prog Metal are 2 totally different genres of music.

^ True, though there's a school of thought that says Metal itself was progressive rock; that is to say, at the time, those pioneering metal - Zep, Sabbath, Priest, maybe Rush, etc. - were also creating a progressive form that was evolving parallel to Prog and rock-fusion.

You have a point here and it's a valid one at that, but to my ears I feel that Prog metal and metal sound so vastly different whereby I personally feel those to types of music don't really sound very similar to me at all, so i would list them as separate from one another. But, I do see your point and can understand how a lot of people would agree with you, but I don't here....for once.
