Wow - it seems AVIVA are going to be added without any collaboration from my side...I'm weakening as a Russian Prog Specialist
annexusquam, there are not so many Russian Prog bands from 60s and 70s and none of them played anything Krautish But I strongly recommend you to check DISEN GAGE and INFRONT - both recent dark and instrumental Russian bands, avalaible via RAIG music label (www.raig.ru).DISEN GAGE have their whole debut album avalaible for downloading FOR FREE from their official site!!! Check those bands here, on Archives !!! Thanks Rivertree, lighthouse and Ivan for posting reviews!!! Erik, where are yours? |

I can't say I'm a fan of Russian music, although I'm from Russia. But I'd recommend Moscow Art Trio (Mikhail Alperin, Arkady Shilkloper, Sergey Starostin). Alperin is a great jazz pianist, this is his project. Check out this video: http://youtube.com/watch?v=qBH8KJZW22o

Although I haven't much cared for what I've heard from the Moscow Art Trio in the past, I enjoyed this video and now I'm thinking about buying something. I have solo albums by Misha Alperin and Arkady Shilkloper. Alperin's "Blue Fjords" is a wonderful piano jazz, though there are tracks that would make proggers smile, too. Shilkloper is a multi-instrumentalist (brass instruments), but best known for his French Horn work. He is quite inventive and although not standard prog fare, I would say his "Hornology" and "Pilatus" are both albums that proggers should enjoy. I say should, because his horn music is adventurous and, well, progressive. On Pilatus, he plays a variety of horns, including trumpet and alpinhorn. He uses multi-track dubbing so that he sounds like a small brass group. Edited by artguyken - April 28 2007 at 17:58 |

I enjoy their solo works too, I saw all of them live, they're really professionals. I'd also recommend "XIX98" album by Shilkloper, Volkov and Starostin. Vladimir Volkov is the greatest contrabass player I've ever seen.

I have only one album by Horizont, Summer in Town. "Snowballs" is very enjoyable, but I find the others to be quite unpleasant.

Now listening to Aviva - Rokus Tonalis and it's brilliant.
Probably the second best ever band from ex-Soviet territory (after Horizont of course, who are, by the way, not like ELP and both albums of whom are masterpieces IMO)
