Not liking the roots of Prog is nothing to be careful about.  I'm not a big fan of early / swing-era Jazz, and not one person has told me that I should. It's called taste.

The Clash is certainly not crap.

Just because something isn't prog doesn't mean it isn't good.

I think some people here have forgotten that.

Keep trying, damn you! Keep trying!

This is your conclusion, I respect it, but you can't make conclusions basing yourself on words that nobody said. I like more non-prog bands than you can imagine, so this is a false statement that "isn't prog isn't good". Clash is crap IMHO, prog or not, just crap, it was only a personal consideration, and remember:

nobody said NON PROG = CRAP

King Crimson - just can't understand the fuss at all. Half-assed and half-baked.

Vddg - Just too odd for me

Most RIO - can handle some Hatfield and the North but most of it is too arch for my liking

Any Prog-Metal - what exactly is the point of this? Why on earth would you bother with prog dumbed down for angst-ridden teenagers?

and finally the (IMO) laughably awful ELP - they make me crack up every time, just so self-important and self-regarding. Add in some rubbish vocals, tub-thumping drums and end of pier, glittery suit organ showing-off and you have a band that just makes me cringe every time I hear them.

There are so many I struggle with I'm surprised I like prog at all

However, Rush 74-84, Genesis up to Abacab, Yes up to Drama, Kansas up to Audio Visions, PFM, Gentle Giant, Tangerine Dream, The Flower Kings, Vangelis, Glass Hammer etc etc make it all better...

I can't stand King Crimson either. Don't like Traffic, Pink Floyd is not worthy of worship, and while I think Gentle Giant - obviously a talented group - had some amazing tunes, I can only tolerate so much of them.

I'm more interested in Kansas, but even they drop the ball at times.

My love is jazz-rock, rock-jazz, jazz fusion - whatever you want to call it.

Bottom line is that we don't have to like everything......it's just impossible.

I don't think it IS possible to like everything its also improbable that you will like everything that your fave bands produce. I will give Gentle Giant a try over the next few weeks.
