It's a yes from me.
Can't get with the love for Syd myself. I wasn't there at the time (well I was, but too young), so maybe I just don't understand the psychedelic vibe of the late 60s. Syd-era Floyd is something I've listened to once and don't choose to listen to again. |

I enjoyed Syd's Floyd contributions BTW. In a way foundational to what the band would become.

Released date are often when it it impacted you but recorded dates are when it really happened...

I believe if he would have continued to work in the studio with the Floyd and not perform with the band, it would have worked out regarding the music itself. Some people in the past have thought that Barrett was a person you couldn't depend on, however..members of Floyd did persuade him to record his 2 solo albums. Barrett could have stayed home and written. Maybe songs like "Dominoes" and "Baby Lemonade" could have appeared on Atom Heart Mother. "Dominoes" in particular would have fit nicely between "Summer of 69" and "Fat Old Sun". Years later Dave Gilmour was performing "Dominoes" live , so maybe that's what he could have done with Barrett's songs in the EARLY 70'S! If Pink Floyd had rehearsed various songs from the first 2 Barrett albums, it would have fit nicely in their show. There is no doubt in my mind. If you pick the best songs from the first 2 Barrett albums, you can insert them into the Floyd studio albums. "Golden Hair" and "Wolfpack" could have been a section of Ummagumma, "Baby Lemonade" on Meddle. Syd Barrett was more atmospheric sounding and more stylistically based on what the Floyd were producing with the acoustic songs on Meddle or quirky songs on A.H.M. , but by the time they were recording W.Y.W.H., it was too late it seemed. Too much time had passed by and Syd declined regarding his performing and maybe his own general interest.

I know we've managed to stretch this out to "page 8" of this thread so late-arrivals are probably skipping page 1 and just reading the fred title, but the original question wasn't "Did Floyd make the right decision to oust Barrett in 1968?" but "Did Floyd make the right decision to not let him rejoin in 1975?"
...just sayin'

Well PF proved everyone wrong that without Syd Barret the band wouldn't survive. This song originally written by Syd Barret and later released on Gilmour Solo Album is sooo... beautiful heartfelt stunning, I can keep replaying this track over and over again. Also I don't think Gilmour ever sang this high before and after hugs to all

I agree on the first part; having lived through Syd's erratic behaviour back when they first ousted him from the band (including the occasional fit of violent or abusive behaviour towards others), I think they would have been very irresponsible to bring him back in. Even if he hadn't shown up looking like an eyebrow-less skinhead goon, they'd have had no way of telling how well he'd have stood up to the rigours of touring (which had hardly gotten any easier since he left and was one of the major stress factors pushing him to leave), and putting him in such a situation having already seen once what that did to him would have not been the act of a true friend, as far as I'm concerned. On top of that, most of the reports I've read of the Abbey Road enocounter is that Syd was kind of dismissive about the bits he heard of WYWH, so even if his offer to rejoin was serious I think the good old standby excuse of "musical differences" would have been more than sufficient to turn him down. That said, part of me wonders just how successful Floyd had really been at crafting an identity independent of Syd. After all, Syd's breakdown was an influence on the themes of Dark Side of the Moon, later on they'd drop in a few Syd references here and there on The Wall, and most significantly in '75 they were right in the middle of recording an album which was literally all about Syd. That isn't really the behaviour of people who have moved on emotionally from a subject, even if musically they had evolved in a very different direction from their early years.
