Looks like the army was firmly with the Egyptian people today, protecting them from the Mubara-thugs.  Right on ! 

Really?  Nothing slight about it under the circumstances, seems to me.
 

^ There will be no Islamofacist government, I want to start my own revolution against the comical Western prejudice against Arabs, but it would be considered "adventurism" (<I.e. impossible). Iran = Persian, Shiite, different circumstances, Thousands of Miles.... Egypt = Sunni- opposed to Shiites, Arabs, animosity with Persians, not the same circumstances as Iran 30 years ago, and Muslim Brotherhood is a different thing entirely from the ayatollahs of another religion and country 30 years ago. I could go on, but suffice to say, western assumptions about Arabs are so far gone from the realm of rationality that it is largely pointless.

As for the army's attitude. The army IS the government. Mubarak is the face of the military. The military plays friendly in their uniforms and tanks so they can find a new face once Mubarak is gone, so they are overlooked. Meanwhile thugs of the same government do what the dressed up soliders avoid doing. There are reports of the army on the 3rd, actually covering and protecting the thugs, as well, so their real attitude shines through sometimes.

Its about tricking people! Obama (as Bush once did) and Mubarak and the think tanks, and military brass, all are focused on creating and controlling impressions. Hence National Prayer Breakfast, Hence Military Smiles and Military Regime Thugs in the same square.

But why would the army forcibly remove him if that isn't necessarily the best course of action at this time?  I think some important subtleties of what's going on are being missed by even the experts.  Who would replace him that would not aggravate the situation further?  The son is probably unacceptable in the long term (and once he's in, it could be hard to remove him), and if the army installs someone it's just another despotism in the making.  Further, I suspect no single person or institution currently has supreme control.  Events are unfolding, not as part of a plan but as they occur. 

 - - and Beck's a very smart guy, it's a shame he allows his knowledge of history and jingoistic tendencies to cloud what could otherwise be a very well-reasoned analysis.

Mubarak makes his latest speech no sign of him going.  The people in the square do not sound pleased.
