When I used the term "fooled," I meant in the sense of people thinking the music is prog when it isn't, not in the sense of people thinking the music is good when it isn't. There are a lot of bands like this on here (cough...Radiohead...cough), it probably comes with the territory in prog.

In any case, judging from the consensus in this thread, it is probably me who has been fooled for not seeing the progressive qualities of The Decemberists.

No, you have been fooled by tyour knowledge of the english language when you didn't realize saying people were "fooled" by ANYTHING is slightly insulting....

Believe me, I've had over forty years' experience of listening to music, and I think I can decide what it is prog or not (of course, in my view of things... Music is not hard science) without anyone telling me I've been 'fooled'. If I can offer a friendly bit of advice to you, be careful of the words you choose... Here on the web we can't rely on facial expressions or gestures to underpin our meaning, and a word like 'fooled' sure does not sound like a compliment.

But even that makes no sense at all.  A band can't "fool" me about whether it's prog or not (how can that even happen?).  Some of The Decemberists' music is prog, some isn't.  I can live with that.  I listen to a lot more than what's included on Prog Archives.

Well, I guess it would be more of a case of people fooling themselves into thinking the band was prog, eh? That is probably even more insulting.

My goal was not to be insulting, but I used the word "fooled" as an attention getter, as I do with nearly all my internet interacting. In any case, I can't think of any synonym that would be less insulting. Tricked, bamboozled, mislead. . . all contain a certain abrasiveness.

And to Snow Dog, my concerns were thoroughly addressed, lol.

I don't get fooled either...as I alluded to earlier... I love a lot of bands that have NOTHING to do with prog.. and more than a few that do have some tendencies.   I don't care if they are prog.. or not... are on the site.. or are not.  If I think it is prog.... I call it prog be it a group like the Decemberists that I love.. or a group like DT I hate... and if it is not prog...  I don't call it prog just because I like it.  Simple as that... and I know that among our collaborators and long time members... most all of us are like that.

Perhaps a bit of history would remedy your opinion of the name:

The Decembrist revolt or the Decembrist uprising (Russian: Восста́ние декабри́стов) took place in Imperial Russia on 14 December (26 December New Style), 1825. Russian army officers led about 3,000 soldiers in a protest against Nicholas I's assumption of the throne after his elder brother Constantine removed himself from the line of succession. Because these events occurred in December, the rebels were called the Decembrists (Dekabristy, Russian: Декабристы). This uprising took place in the Senate Square in Saint Petersburg. In 1925, to mark the centenary of the event, it was renamed as Decembrist Square (Ploshchad' Dekabristov, Russian: Площадь Декабристов). The revolt was suppressed by Nicholas I.

So far, the name of the band "The Decemberists" is the only thing I like about them.

But why do you think they fooled us? You think they petitioned to be here?

(Maybe they did, I don't know)

..and even if they did...they would have gone through a process (and I was in charge of Band Submissions once, so I understand the lenghty [process) before being added!

Now I understand!  You don't like them, but want to make us look like fools for liking them. This has f-all to do with them being prog or anything... It's like I started a thread about how people are idiots for thinking Dream Theater are prog, just because I don't like them. I wonder if you or any of the other naysayers in this thread have ever heard about personal taste.

the usual way.....  the senior collabs thought they were prog...  and thus were added.  Trust me... they weren't asking to be added here.  LOL

Well I think it's interesting that the hottest three threads in the Prog Music Lounge this week are:

1.  Popular Prog Bands that you just can't get into (mostly old farts BTW)

2. this thread

3. Prog albums that didn't age well (mostly old farts BTW)

and they are also the #15 most-visited band page right now (and that's out of 4,373 bands).

So whether the Decemberists are prog or not (and the consensus seems to be - 'who cares'); at least they are definitely a topic of interest around here Big smile
