This is a thread that could have us all arguing continually for the forseeable future. No matter our backgrounds or how we arrived here we have a constant and that is our appreciation of all things prog.We can choose whatever words we wish to describe another and some of us no doubt have a better understanding of the technical side of instruments, but it all comes down to taste and that will far outweigh our belief in another's proficiencies.Words like journeyman are very appropriate to me, but , somebody else will find the journeyman a genius and therein lies the real beauty of all music.Yes, I like to tell Three Fates she should get carted away for her delusionment about Greg being a better singer than Jon, but others will find Robbie Wiliams better than them both We are lucky to have embraced and experienced the music we love. This is a great site but how can I rid myself of old clowny. and just for the record 'Yes Rules'

I would like to say that Dream Theater has the best musicians in the world. Unfortunately this great band isn't mentioned in this poll...

How do you measure proficiency in any musical area - Speed - accuracy - Time-change and chord structure ?
Rush, Genesis, Camel, Yes, Dream Theater - all these bands have quality musicians and so do ELP, Floyd, IQ, Marillion, Twelfth Night et all - Again back to subjectivity and opinion - sombody who hates DT (Take a bow Reed) - will proclaim that the music they produce is rubbish - ergo they are not as profficent as Rush (for instance!).....

separately the Yes members have a major advantage (CTTE & Fragile line-up) but their personal merits summed up exceeds the collective Yes merits.
However , the Beatles were the exact opposite. Their collective sums were much greater than their personal merits.

I voted forJethro Tull.
In the 70's I think that The Mahavishnu Orchestra had some incredible musicians.

I have voted for the King Crimson, according to me the most gifted during their history and with an equilibrium between virtuosity and creativeness only.I would like to vote an Italian lineup with Miki De Rossi/drums,Pignatelli or Laugelli/bass,Mussida and Venegoni/guitar,Pagani/violin and flauto,Nocenzi/keyboards,Di Giacomo and Stratos/voices,D'Anna/sax, gotten by by Pagani and De Scalzi.
