I can answer that. I have a very specific memory of it. April 1990. I was lying fatigued and lapsing in and out of consciousness in a medical tent at the finish of a triathlon with a few litres of IV fluids running into my arm. Black Night came on over the finish-line PA. I was hurting like f*ck but in a happy place.

I just remembered one from a long time ago.
I remember several years ago on the tonight show with Jay Leno(when he was still the host)they played a snippet of Uriah Heep's "stealin" because they were doing a segment on stealing or something. Anyway, I didn't even know the song at that point but recognized it immediately as UH because of the vocals.

Hearing Kanye West's 'Power' on the public radio has to be one of these frequent moments.

I just saw a tv commercial for a local politician and I saw for just a second that there was a guy standing in a group of people wearing a Yes t shirt.

^That's interesting. I remember there being a brewery in my general area called prism beer that had Floyd Fridays. You could go in the bar area on Friday and hear a different Pink Floyd album each Friday. From what I understand the place closed down though. I think what might have happened was they expected to get their pudding without eating their meat. ;)

Like the hogweed, exposure to the sap of the tonget or poison tree of Palau, Micronesia can cause blistering of the skin. Visitors to the island nation have reportedly developed this condition simply by standing under the tree during a rainstorm. Similarly, the sap of the common fig tree (closely resembling the tonget) here in the States can cause painful blistering and rashes on the skin.

Not only did King Crimson help Hercule Poirot but it was a two fer. A painting in the Marsdon Manor episode was a vital clue. It was also used for King Crimson's Epitaph compilation sets. The very one... The gas mask scene too it to another level. Level 5 I think. Power To Believe.

Watching Episode 2 of the Portrait Artist of the Year 2020 earlier and some of the contestants were wearing headphones whist painting. One particular artist was asked what he was listening to. I think he confused the presenter, Stephen Mangan , when he answered King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard.

I once saw Robert Fripp in an unexpected place when he appeared on the All Star Mr & Mrs game show, where he was introduced as the husband of Toyah Wilcox and King Crimson never even got a mention.

^Yeah, that's totally ridiculous for them not to mention King Crimson. They might not be a household name like Peter Gabriel, David Bowie and Blondie but come on. He's still more famous for playing with KC. Can you imagine if it was Steve Howe and they mentioned him playing with Asia, GTR, Lou Reed, Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Queen but not Yes? I'm not sure when that was recorded but these days Yes probably aren't that much more well known than KC (or at least not as much as you might think they would be).

I don’t really think it’s ridiculous at all. For the general masses Toyah Wilcox is the household name. I remember one Christmas with my in-laws, when they were discussing music, and my mother-in-law said she thought Toyah was married to some other musician - and suggested it was one of those more obscure bands my father-in-law listened to (obscure meaning Peter Gabriel, I think, because that is as “far” more mainstream as I can ascertain his musical tastes go). They both looked at me, because everyone knows I love music, ans I had to tell them it was Robert Fripp (blank looks), from King Crimson (blank looks). And he played some of the funky guitar sounds you hear on David Bowie’s “Heroes” and Scary Monsters albums (oh, is that who it is). To be honest, I’m not sure they knew that Fripp has played on Bowie’s albums, so much as they knew what I meant by the funky guitar sounds. Bottom line, Fripp is definitely Toyah’s wife, and not the other way around, and I wouldn’t expect to see it in any other way - unless it was something prog-specific, where the audience is already familiar with who he is. That’s my in-laws, but I’m quite sure it would be the same with my own parents. They’d probably recognise Toyah’s name, but not Fripp’s. And they’ve likely never heard of Crimson. I suspect for most people, Fripp, if he exists in their knowledge at all, is known for his association with Toyah and/or Bowie, above all else. |

Frippshows - I've never seen him so animated!
As to topic, doesn't it seem the big grocery chains have been pandering music-wise to those of a certain age? Seems logical enough - pander to the paying. As much as I find myself humming and tapping along, it also makes me a bit irritable to hear Heroes or Roundabout while shopping....I always get that, "I know what you're getting at!" attitude toward it all - pretty nefarious when you think about it, that whole product placement, scents and samples, favorite songs to make it all pleasant, like an etherized march toward the inevitable all while squeezing my wallet dry (don't get me started on 50th anniversary re-re-re-releases)......but I can't help singing along anyway.....or grabbing the latest pressing of Anthem of the Sun!

Good point about the grocery chains/elevator music! The other day, I heard Gabriel's "Sledge Hammer" and have been hearing quite a bit of 70s and 80s prog. I asked someone about it, they said that many stores just use a Spotify play-list....I'd much rather hear "Heroes" etc. than most of the cr*p being recorded these days.
