Gah, bassliners like Fedex really do have a dull game.
I much prefer Serve and Volleyers.

What draws me to prog is the classic prog sound of Yes and ELP and dare I say Rush. And thus the reason why I like Neo because it maintains that sound. Sure the music may not be "The most original" but it is not as though Neo is a bunch of cover songs or previously written music with the words changed. Each of the bands has their own unique sound and style although there is a similiarity within that style. For me it is about the warmness and melodies of the songs, as well as the stories that are told. None of that exists in RIO/Avant, which to my ears sounds more like random notes thrown together to see what sticks on the wall. I can appreciate that it is this randomness of the notes that makes it sound so brilliant to its fans, but it just don't work for me.
And in regards to the snob comment, it does apply to many avant fans; see Rocktopus, and in many aspects also James. (I mean no offense by this but it is that love of RIO/Avant over any other form of music that prevails and does comes forth over the internet as snobbery. Of course, the funniness to labelling it snobbery, is that from the avant fan point of view, it is seen more as defending your favorite genre against the unfair persecution that it receives from folks like me that don't see its brilliance. ). |
You know, Scott, I agree with you about the snobbery of some people here, but not about the 'random notes thrown together'. Now, I am anything but an Avant expert, but what I have heard is far from lacking in melody, though it may be a kind of melody that puts you off (very dark, sometimes even claustrophobic). I am not into dissonance for its own sake myself, but I have a very instinctive approach to music - I like what appeals to me at a deeper level, whether it is pop, Avant, symph, metal, or whatever.

I hope that you all know me well enough to know that it is not my intent to disparage anyone's musical tastes or to claim that my musical tastes are superior to anyone else's because that is certainly not my intent or belief. And lord knows that I haven't listened to enough RIO/Avant to paint a legitimate broad blanket opinion regarding it. My opinion of "random notes thrown together" is based on my limited sampling of the genre. I suspect that if I were to listen to more and more of it, I would eventually get used to it and probably see it from a similar point of view.

That's the thing, Univers Zéro doesn't even sound avant-garde to me.

ME TOO!
Oh and erm, there's a lot of avant-prog in the database that sounds like classical music, as well as gypsy, klezmer and blasmusik. It's a very varied genre.
The Science Group's debut, although not a concept album, has vocals all about science and it's melodic as well. I really love The Science Group.

I love the Science Group.
And, the new Alamaaliman Vasarat is on emusic. Yay! |
I did see that on emusic. I might have to use some downloads on that one.

And Raff, your true entry into the RIO/Avant cult won't be complete without Henry Cow. At least all of their studio stuff.

Hey guys, just curious. What do you think of N. Korea's threat of "wiping America off the map"? Are they even serious in saying that?

I need the new Alamaailman Vasarat album, I don't have it yet. Do you know where I can get it on CD? The last album I got sent for free.

Yes, and there's nothing "random" about their music at all. Quite in the other direction, really.

The album that I have from Univers Zero is pretty good. I'd say more typical of a jazz album than a Henry Cow album.

They might be serious in that they want to do that, but their capability is well short of it. Put it this way - I'm an American, and I'm not losing any sleep about North Korea's statements. Although I do consider firing a missile towards Hawaii as an act of war, and that we should feel free to retaliate.

This is why you need Pocket Orchestra's album. Amazing stuff. Like Shub-Niggurath, only much much much more intense.

UZ don't play jazz. I think I know what you mean though. But HC are much more akin to jazz than UZ.

Listen to it soon.
It's one of the best chamber-prog albums I've ever heard.

The only problem I have with this statement is it is the poor citizen of North Korea that would suffer from our retaliation and they have suffered quite enough I think. And this includes most of their military who have no choice but to serve. I think that in this case, similar to with Iran, we would need to have a surgical strike that takes out the top tier idiots that have the power and not the minions who have no choice but to follow or die.
