I don't dislike 'styles', just music.... When I listen to something, whether I like it or not has absolutely nothing to do with its belonging to a particular subgenre, but only with what my ears and brain perceive as being good or not. For this reason, I have never participated in any of those threads about your favourite (or least favourite) subgenre. Unlike others here on PA, I will always be willing to give any band or artist a chance.

The only band I found tolerable in neo-prog was Darwin's Radio.

Mike told me earlier it's the same vocalist that's in Frost* and I really really dislike Frost*.

What draws me to prog is the classic prog sound of Yes and ELP and dare I say Rush.  And thus the reason why I like Neo because it maintains that sound.  Sure the music may not be "The most original" but it is not as though Neo is a bunch of cover songs or previously written music with the words changed.  Each of the bands has their own unique sound and style although there is a similiarity within that style.  For me it is about the warmness and melodies of the songs, as well as the stories that are told.  None of that exists in RIO/Avant, which to my ears sounds more like random notes thrown together to see what sticks on the wall.  I can appreciate that it is this randomness of the notes that makes it sound so brilliant to its fans, but it just don't work for me.

You know, Scott, I agree with you about the snobbery of some people here, but not about the 'random notes thrown together'. Now, I am anything but an Avant expert, but what I have heard is far from lacking in melody, though it may be a kind of melody that puts you off (very dark, sometimes even claustrophobic). I am not into dissonance for its own sake myself, but I have a very instinctive approach to music - I like what appeals to me at a deeper level, whether it is pop, Avant, symph, metal, or whatever.
