At least for me, I'm not that big fan of solo artists, tbh, which is why I've put SW solo carrer in the first position.

Pink Floyd is my favorite band, and I love David Gilmour, Roger Waters and Richard Wright solo carrer, but aside maybe from Broken China, I don't think their individual albums are that strong, even though I think David Gilmours as a vocalist and guitarrist is much better than SW's.

I enjoy a lot more band's work, such as Pink Floyd itself or even Porcupine Tree compared to SW solo carrer. (same for Genesis and etc)

True. I donīt think Beefheart is making prog at all, but really heīs my biggest fav of artists put as solo artists in PA. And I think Paul made this poll to put here fav artists. So no more wonder of the Wilson from me.

Itīs really much same to me also! I havenīt heard many Genesis or Yes members solo albums, just because ones I have heard havenīt been even close to the greatness of bands albums. But I think I have heard almost all Floyd members albums, just because Floyd is so big to me. But have to say Pohjola & Gustavson solo albums rise really near of the greatness of Wigwamīs albums, so there are exceptions for me (I think all of those are in my list).

I actually don't give a rat's arse whether an album is by a group or a solo artist. and there are many examples of excellent solo albums, like for example "Voyage of the Acolyte" by Steve Hackett, "Fish out of Water" by Chris Squire, "Olias of Sunhillow" by Jon Anderson, "Ruth is Stranger than Richard" by Robert Wyatt, "Dein Kopf ist ein schlafendes Auto" by Roman Bunka, "In Camera" by Peter Hammill or "Captain Lockheed and the Starfighters" by Robert Calvert, to name but a few

There are solo albums that are great indeed, but at least for me I enjoy a lot more a band's effort, which, even when there's someone which is the clear leader (Roger Waters, SW, etc), the contributions of others members still make big difference and gives the whole work a bigger sense of identity.

Actually he was in a "prog" band before heīs solo career: he was in "Kevin Ayers & the Whole World" that recorded "Shooting at the Moon"-album. He was also in Ayers album "Whatevershebringswesing".

There are 3 albums by Frank Zappa, 3 by Miles Davis, 2 by Steven Wilson, 1 by Mike Oldfield, 1 by Peter Hammill, 1 by Robert Wyatt, 1 by Steve Hackett, 1 by Bill Cobham & 1 by Al Di Meola. Rest are bands. And that list comes mostly for the ratings from PA listeners.

and what exactly does that prove? in my opinion only that many people become aware of the names of many musicians first because they come across a band that they were in at some time. I know it was so with me. there was a band I liked, and when I became aware that some member of a band made a solo album I went and bought it too.

an indicator for that is that the two solo artists of whom there are 3 albums in the top 100 are not best known for being in a certain band but because of their solo work

I've never heard any of Steven Wilson's solo albums, so it's no surprise that I'm surprised he's currently leading the poll, although not for long I suspect. Smile

As well as never hearing any Led Zeppelin, add Steven Wilson to your list LOL

Mike Oldfield is a big reason he is not popular here on lists, plus his one album big album is hit and miss for many, let alone trying to listen to everything up to Tubular Bells XII Wink (Wink Wink).....
