Your kidding right?? You have heard La Villa before or at least heard people talk about it.....no way I am calling your bluff bro!!

Never heard it once.  Back when that song was out, I was a gigging bassist in Tulsa, Oklahoma....the "Tony Levin of Tulsa."  I played with Bob Fripp's amazing Guitar Craft student Lon Jones and his band "CAVU," and also sat in with a bunch of bands.

I don't tend to sit around and just listen to stuff, I did that in college (73-77).  Most of what I know from Rush is their AOR catalog = "Tom Sawyer" and stuff like that.

I also really liked their message in "Closer to the Heart," we could use some of that in the Middle East.

Peace, Brother!  I'd post some of my own music stuff, but as a sideman, I'd need copyright permission.  The 80s were a trip!

I kind of had an inkling that somebody like you coming on so strongly with an opinion about Rush must have not heard some of their songs.  Give a listen to songs like Natural Science.  Even Trees is kinda mini-prog.  I mean it's really short but it does go through lots of transitions compared to, say, a pure hard rock/heavy metal act of their time.

Yup, the notion that a group like Rush never used a mellotron, or even mandolin and bouzouki, is down to unfamiliarly with an a artist that's not one of their favorites.

OK, guilty as charged!  I need to listen more deeply.  Good conversation by the way!!

Hello guys! I've been a huge fan since the release of their first album. I was a kid and a fan of hard-rock back then (all kids were) and hence instantly became a Rush fan as soon as I listened to the self-titled debut. Definitely, their style was pretty complex, but it was a zeitgeist and the music of many hard-rock bands of that time was complex. Rush were heavy, too heavy to be considered as a Prog Rock band at the time.

How would one categorise Genesis if one had only listened to their more popular stuff from the 80s?
How would one categorise Yes if one had only heard the debut?
How would one categorise Kraftwerk if one had only listened to the first couple of albums?

It reminds me of the folks that tear rap and hip hop a new one every time there’s even a mention..no matter what artist, track or instrumentation behind..because well it’s rap and they once heard half a track over the radio...just like fans of pop once heard the middle bit of Roundabout and subsequently deem all prog equal to that.

Wait, you mean humans default to making massively drastic assumptions via small sets of data, then project that as a hard-and-fast rule of everything?! Lol. I agree!

..and well in this thread it is quite easy to laugh at...but when it continues to happen in other more serious topics, it pisses me off. Just take a look at the ‘Jerusalem thread’

I always enjoy tearing rap, because I find it awful LOL (That's my problem, I know)
However, I must admit that Run the Jewels is pretty badass, probably the only rap that does something to me! Definitely a stand-out act in my book.

Not so fast partner. This begs the question: were Genesis still prog after 1983? Discuss.

Being generous with 1983.  Duke barely makes it and that's 1980.  Unless people think that maybe 1 out 4 or 5 songs on an album is sufficient to be prog or anything with keyboards and synth included is Prog?

I agree and have developed a new subgenre for them after 1983: proto pop. Wink

you should listen to Tony Banks's album from 1983. You might stop blaming Phil for the poppy sound.

I don't wish to create Permanent Waves, but Rush have always been a Hard Rock band to my ears, throughout the Different Stages of their long career. Hold Your Fire though, because Hey Presto, all the Signals indicate that Rush are a Progressive Rock band too. My guess is that Rush and their Canadian Counterparts are likely to still have a strong following in 2112, if the Snakes & Arrows of outrageous fortune are still on their side. Maybe we should have a poll and then we can have A Show of Hands, although there's no Rush. It's time now for me to Exit... Stage Left. Smile

Hard rock with progressive tendencies, is my assessment of Rush.
