I understand why he's not doing the cookie monster vocals these days, but I would be happier if the music itself were a bit heavier than what was on Heritage.

I don't mind growls at all since Still Life is one of my favorite albums and I like some death metal bands. But I'm pretty sure I read in an interview that Mikael decided to call it quits on the growls.

I remember on the Heritage DVD that Mikael said something like he hasn't ruled out growls ever again in Opeth's music, but that right now, he isn't feeling it.

Indeed. I remember him saying something about exploring new musical perspectives and I'm totally for that, even if I don't particularly like where it's leading to, which is not the case with Opeth.

Mikael went through a rough patch where he switched monitor systems during live use, and it really messed up his growl technique. A lot of people had thought he blew out his voice (maybe permanently), but when he switched back to the old monitoring system all was well.
Hopefully being able to growl comfortably again live will lead to a bit of growl on the next album. I think Opeth's best album is Ghost Reveries, so a return to heavier material would be just fine by me. I will forever lament Martin Lopez leaving the band, though.

It was OK. I can't even get through The Ministry of Lost Souls, though.

I have to agree that it has two songs that I didn't enjoyed thoroughly: Forsaken and Ministry; the former because of the huge amounts of cheese/badness and the latter because it's way too big, but still enjoyable.

I didn't necessarily hate any of the songs, but all of them except for The Dark Eternal Night and In the Presence of Enemies were kind of meh for me. And even though I like ADEN, I don't really think it's one of DT's better songs. Ministry sounded good at first and then went on forever with an out-of-place solo section. BC&SL was an improvement, in my opinion (musically, not lyrically ) and then they came back with ADTOE and that was great. |

Agreed, Systematic Chaos was a dip in quality for DT, but they came back with BC&SL, though flawed, a much better album. However, A Dramatic Turn of Events blows them all away.
I like The Dark Eternal Night, it's got great riffs. If Opeth did a song or two like that on the new album, I'd probably enjoy it. |

I've had a feeling that the next Opeth album would be heavier than Heritage but without returning to death metal style vocals. From the whispers that are going around it seems very probable. I for one will be happy without the growls - it was always something I've tolerated rather than enjoyed and even Watershed had a higher clean vocal ratio than past releases.

I have liked Opeth since Morningrise and I love Heritage so will probably enjoy whatever Mikael decides upon. I would like the music to be a bit heavier next time and don't expect any growls but trust Mikael is continuing to "progress" and is still being influenced by his record collection.

I would be extremely happy if Opeth came with a full metal album withough growls.

I'm a huge fan of the Swedish death metal proggers. What I really want is another concept-ish album like Morningrise or Still Life. However, I just really enjoy almost everything Opeth puts out (save for Deliverance, MAYBE). So if this new album is sort of in the hard rock vein, I'm fine without Mikael's death growls. I hope that the progressive elements are still VERY prominent within their compositions.

I consider drone metal to be progressive...

(Systematic Chaos is to me exactly what DT sounds like for the DT haters)
On topic : I must say I never got really excited by Heritage. Storm Corrosion was a superb album imo, but I wouldn't mind if Mikael stopped using the acoustic for a while ... I still trust him as a songwriter, he has repeatedly shown great talent. Never was a big fan of Opeth anyway (although Blackwater Park blows me away every time I listen it) so if it's bad, it's ok for me :p |

I don't mind the growls but I prefer the songs with clean vocals.(I loved Heritage). I would be happy if Opeth did another album that sounds either similar to Watershed or Heritage. Ghost Reveries, although great and proggy in some spots, was too orthodox Opeth for me, with too much emphasis on 'heavy.'
