I trust Mojo wont mind if I post this intriguing list from the pages of their Prog  magazine

    anyway - I can guarantee if you use the list as a starting point you get a pretty good feel for the genre altho some albums are criminally overlooked (mostly English speaking here which is a dang shame as some of the best prog is found elsewhere such as Italy) Anyway take it as you will.

    of all the albums the ones I wished i didnt purchase are octopus, Roxy Music, Third, and Phaedra. I actually went on to the CD prog store specialist and gave him the list and he pulled them off the shelf one after another! I had to stop him eventually as i was up to $800. Anyway eventually i bought them off him and became a VIP customer - those were the days before downloading was in vogue.

    I systematically got hold of all the songs mentioned form prog artists that were essential according to the writers of the articles.
     
    Great pictures and reviews - a top 40 prog album list worthy of bottling. I read it cover to cover and was obssessed with the prog genre from then on.
     
    I already loved Pink Floyd and a few others in it but was introd to Yes, VDGG and King Crimson through this mag as well as Mars Volta and early Genesis and Rush and Jethro Tull! I had heard of these bands but found out enough about them to get me totally interested in more of their musuc through this very mag! Heres info on it.

    The only thing I can suggest is ebay also although occasionally second hand shops may have it.

    I remember seeing this a while back and I loved the top 40 list! Got me into Sigur Ros (particularly Agaetis Byrjun), The Moody Blues (In Search Of The Lost Chord) and various other's such as Hawkwind, Aphrodite's Child, and A Night At The Opera by Queen.

    Great list - I have 26 of them. Of the rest, several are not my cup of tea and the rest are on my wish list. Prog Archives woke me up from my Prog slumber and got me back into the genre. I already had 19 of the aforementioned 26.

    Currently 26 out of those 40, but at least 20 of those I had heard and "been there" when they came out (like Moody Blues, even though I don't have the albums), and was well aware of the feelings and ideals that they represented and made you think, and you and some of your friends talked about it in school.
     
    Trust me, that in 1968, many of us in school discussed and asked what Jimi and Jim and Janis meant! And sometimes we wondered if we were missing something of what it was all about. So when you hear the anger in one song by Creedence later, you know that it was real ... not an idea!
     
    I am not sure that the magazine can make this reality that helped create the music important, or that it bothered, which is one of the reasons why I tend to not enjoy many of these. It makes the music come off empty and meaningless for me.
     
    But, all in all, it is good to see it show new fans and folks something about that time and place! Just remember that ... time and place! Not just music!
    Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

    I heard all 40 on that list but do not agree they should be on it when other prog artists were absent. Its still a pretty good list though for the newbie.

    I'll have to dig out that issue from my closet ....prolly full of dust and spiders by now.

    The only part that hurts is that 45 years later, lines like "c'mon baby light my firrrrrre!", still don't mean much, other than a frivolous act or a quickie! Or hearing Jimi tear up an anthem in front of garbage, is still ignored and not understood because everyone wants to hear the blues God, or Janis screaming about a piece of her heart, means nothing to anyone anymore!

    Maybe I take these things too seriously, but I believe in the "heart", and its honesty and there is a serious difference in color between what some of these people did with their hearts and a bunch of crappy pop songs out there, and this was the generation that helped define what became known as "progressive", which at the time, would have been considered music that was more intelligent and not just a pop song.

    The magazine, for my tastes, looks at it all as just a popular form of music for the masses! Albeit I have no objection to seeing another generation learn about it, and appreciate the music. That part is awesome, with one exception! They will just remember one song and it's just a part of their list of songs, and that is not what "progressive" was all about at all!

    We have to come to "grips" with that sooner or later. We either believe in the form, or it's just another pot and pan out there for your kitchen!

    For newcomers to the progiverse, the magazine serves as a very good signpost.  Readers can see a name they like the sound of, and check them out on youtube/spotify/wherever and then explore further if they like what they hear.  But it starts with magazines such as this one.  Just as in the early 70s it started with "Top Of The Pops" for many people.
