Totally agree with you. They're born as Beatles clones, fight to ut their own music in their records and produce some very good albums. The thing started to ruin when Peter Tork decided to leave. But their "maturity" albums citade abice are worth- listening.
Of course they're not prog. But who cares about this? Thw world has a lot of other interesting music to offer, and The Monkees are fun and unpretentious.
Bach, Ma, Bros, Déia, Dante.

You can't deny that they had a lot of great, if nonthreatening, pop tunes. On "Headquarters," They actually did start playing their own instruments. The point about the moog was relevant, because it was introduced by the band members. They were striving to be more than their handlers wanted them to be. Check out "Headquarters," and "Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd." (with an open mind) It may change the way you view these guys.
But they had absolutely nothing to do with prog.

Have you ever seen the film "Head"?

No, but everything I've read, or heard, suggests that it's a complete mess. An unsupervised Monkee may not always be a good thing.

It's a brilliant film in my opinion - and it is also a complete mess.

The two are not mutually exclusive

Anyway, they're supervised by Frank Zappa...

There are some strange bands included in PA but I feel anyone would be hard pressed to make an argument for The Monkees! Never knew their claim to fame with the Moog though I must admit.

They did make some great music and although some may take the mickey (Dolenz or otherwise...) out of their musicianship, let's not forget Mike Nesmith was/is an acomplished musician.

Hey why not add George Michael ?

Oh yeah, nevermind. He's already in the archives. Sort of.

LOL
Fire up the flux capacitor ! We're taking this Delorean through all four dimensions.

What is the future of prog ? Genesis reunion ? I'm not telling! That could upset the thyme/space continuum.
