Recommendation at that excellent discussion group for most matters of jazz fusion, especially the NEW, Fusenet:
 
Eivind Aarset is new name to me, a Norwegian  guitarist in the nu.fusion territory - although the first track of this album, Sign Of Seven  is less jazz rock and has more a straight prog instrumental about it. Generally though the music is nu.fusion, Aarset is somewhere between Nils Petter Molvaer and Bugge Wesseltoft but with his own distinctive sound/feel. As I was warned by the reviewer at Fusenet, Aarset stylistically is different from the major mainstream jazz rock guitarists.

oh lordie, my fusion/prog obessions have been revived after mths of post punk and noise!!!!

btw, am i the only one who's noticed a giant leap in the creativity and talent in newer fusion these days? like the "genre" itself has been becoming great again. the only thing im waiting for is more newer 'bands'

oh yeah as to Darkshade's ques about 'new fusion' i wld say the issue is who do we consider as this new fusion? 
 
is it those who are, like in the prog rock scene, 'continuing the tradition' of classic jazz rock 60s-70s but w some new input or are they ppl whose work may not be directly alluding to that period but whose experimental daring and/or ideas somehow revive that spirit?
 
I cannot give egs of the former but for the latter these bands/artists really push the envelope and give exciting new vibes to the idea of fusion/jazz rock:

well since jazz has stagnated in the last 15-20 years, with a lot of exceptions, i see the second coming of fusion making a lot of sense.

besides the fact that jazz has been around for over a century and has fluctuated in popularity since, it's inevitable that a very creative form of jazz would return.

"newer" jazz is a lot different than classic fusion (unlike some modern prog bands that take a lot from the classic era (as discussed in other posts)) it does take from the 70s, but one has to remember that it is still JAZZ and jazz has always taken from the past and expanded on it. anyway, fusion these days seems to take a lot more of the 'groove' and Jaco's influence is highly felt in the music today. also straight/post-bebop jazz seems to have made a comeback by being incorporated within other musical contexts.

basically, IMO, the jazz-rock of Jaco, Zappa, Miles, Hancock, etc, and the influence of Coltrane has finally caught up with modern jazz. Because you know jazz went downhill in a lot of areas after '78 or so. The 80's were not the best time for jazz with exceptions. The 90's werent really either, although acid jazz (once again Miles influenced) was around, and some guys were doing it. now this decade, people seem to realize what the guys in the late sixties and 70's were doing.

i think what im trying to get at is Jazz is in it's comeback stage, although i dont think it's hit it's peak yet, or has come close. the reason i dont say JAZZ-FUSION or anything like that is because it's ALL jazz now. anything that's come out in the last 8 years cant really be strictly classified as fusion, world music, funk-rock fusion, or anything like that. it's just JAZZ because the mindset is always there these days, whether it's a funk-infused jam, or free jazz communications over a steady groove, or bebop timing with a more rock melody, it's all pretty much under the same roof.

can anyone add to what im saying? i feel as if im going on and on now, i feel i may have gotten my point across, i hope. does anyone else understand??

also to add to what i posted, even prog bands, jam bands, rock bands, and so on include jazz and/or fusion into their music, whether intentionally or not (usually intentionally) it's definitely become very popular again (as popular as jazz could ever really be)

speaking of new jazz I recently discovered The Heliocentrics a jazz group that fuses lots of strange influences with their jazz sometimes even hip-hop (but in a good way) check them out
 
who hiccuped endlessly trying to giggle but wound up with a sob

it could be anybody. Scofield, although he's been around since the mid-70's is still putting out groundbreaking material and progressing as always. Same with Mike Stern, Pat Metheny, and Michael Brecker until his passing earlier this year.

those are all older guys though, newer ones would be guys like Charlie Hunter, Steve Jenkins, Dave Fuzeinsky (sp?), and others.

what the jazz world, the rock world, the MUSIC world needs is guys like Miles, Zappa, Coltrane, and others that were great band leaders and visionaries that could find young talent and exploit their best traits and then in turn those people would have great careers after leaving their leaders' bands.
