Toni you remember quite well, I guess they do have a math rock-ish sound (though I don't really like the term), I suppose that is where I spanned the avant-garde influences. There is a sample on the temporary residence site. It is quite subdued compared to some of their other music I have heard. Never less they still interest me.

I just had another look at the site just before, and came to realise they were Cerberus Shoal's label in the early days. Some people might be familiar with their latter inputs which jumps over into the Avant-prog side of things. But for at least three albums straight (late 90's) they played post-rock. I only have their album 'Homb' from this period, but I thoroughly enjoy it. The band is a creative force and definitely put their own spin on the scene. Even their later works have a lot of post-rock aura surrounding them, pushing forward a somewhat sinister side of the band.

Just heard a sample off the new Explosions in the Sky album, it seems no real progress has happened. The sound is rather similar to their other works, which is not a bad thing per se, but I was hoping that they would do something more "out of the norm" this time. Oh well, it's better not to judge until I've heard the full album.

This really doesn't surprise me. From the beginning this band never really did much for me. They produced some very solid albums, but none really moved me particularly. They definitely are a lot better live than studio band (some may disagree with this). Though I think this is the case with my post-rock.

Nice overviews Rico.Thumbs Up I'll check Camofleur out.

Adam, I would really like to listen to those samples of Kammerflimmer Kollektief and even Tarantula A.D., but I have to slow down a bit. I have too many albums in my possesion at the momment and many of them are unlistened. (if only there were 30 hours in a day Ermm)

It's sad to see Explosions in the Sky not doing something new. It was just a matter of time before they would run out of ideas.

On a side note, here's another band that released and album this year:

Lis Er Stille
The Construction of the AmpTrain

[Denmark; post-rock] Long, instrumental grooves that build and build...and build. They buck trends and win hearts.

And here's another sample:
Lis Er Stille - Lobetid

EitS nothing new? Ouch

The Rescue EP was certainly a place for small difference and innovatings. I did express my hope that the band will progress towards some sort of old story - refreshed habit.

Just a little something I have been listening to of late (sorry if the translation from German is a little poor):

Bathyscaphe - -11034m

Monopsone/chronowax - 2004

Nothing could better start for this new album of Bathyscaphe than this piece entitled Flexible which, in 6 minutes and 45 seconds, gives the opportunity to you to hear one of the most powerful titles and of most beautiful of this year 2004. It remained more for this Parisian group only to connect for the remainder of the album -11034m titles quite as strong as this Flexible device to do of them one of the most interesting albums of this first six-month period 2004.

Born from a meeting with the top enters the labels (Monopsone and the Québécois Where are My records) -11034m follows upon a first album entitled Road Movie left on the structure Lykill records.

Directed towards the composition of film music since their beginnings, courts and full-length films, Bathyscaphe signs for their second test of the eminently cinematographic musics returning images (randomly) of cold lakes, or more largely evoking speed, the power such as can be to it this formidable submarine.

In an energetic register post-rock'n'roll pointing out work of combos such as b*****d or Ulan Bator, Bathyscaphe makes a success of a quasi-perfect disc in which the group exploits the tended environments carried by a rhythm section étincelante, guitars/synthés cold and sharp giving an accent cold-wave to the pieces.

Then one imagines the group well - Fred Charlot (samples guitars, sequences) his/her brother Olivier (low and sampler) and Cyril Moyer (battery) - to give all his power in concert with his throbbing loops, his guitars grinçantes, his rushes of batteries without end, which inevitably carry you in hypnotic fright sublimes.

call me a fanboy but is that "quote"  in your sig from any particular song? I could swear it's from Goodbye Sober Day.....

also, Mouth of the Architect is another (soon to be added/recently added) post-metal/sludge band on the site under "Progmetal", they do have some "hardcore" vocals, but their duration is very short and the rest of the music is awesome Big smile

Nice to hear. Hex is a great album and it's kind of a historical landamark for the genre since it was the first album to be called "post-rock".

If you want more band names and recommendation then check out the previous pages. There are free MP3s, a list of the 50 best post-rock albums of 2005, some thoughts on certain albums by our fellow Rico and lots of more recommendations. Check them out.Smile

Ah. Mr. Bungle. One of my favorite bands.Thumbs Up California is a great album, but Disco Volante takes the cake.

It's good to see you're liking those bands, funguscankill. I only have Perdition City, Blood Inside and A Quick Fix of Melancholy EP and all of those 3 albums are great. I really enjoy their sound, but Blood Inside in my opinion didn't sound as fresh as Perdition City. Godspeed You! Black Emperor on the other hand... well, I really can't get enough of them. My favorite band since the first time I heard them.Thumbs Up

Heyisthatguy. I haven't heard Mouth of the Architect yet, but if you want some post-metal bands without growls then I can recommend you get the band Tides. They're one of the bands we're trying to add. The other one I would recommend is Tone. They've been added to the Archives recently. Both are definetly recommended for fans of Russian Circle and Pelican.Wink

Please
listen to this song from Tone's latest album. Satisfaction is garanteed.

Tone - C & P (6:50)

Enjoy!

Aye, I too thought The Rescue was a nice change of pace that had lots of great quiet moments. Definitely a step in the right direction, but the single off of the upcoming album sounded like the old stuff.

Ah, I'm experiencing a glorious return to the music of Sigur Rós! I hadn't listened to these Icelandic fellows for quite some time. I'd gotten so caught up in the happenings of Explosions and Do Make Say Think that I forgot about the band that got me interested in the genre. Sigur Rós' music is quite unlike all those guys - it's much more... icy? Mystical? Magical? I'm not sure.

Jonsi's voice could move galaxies.

I see what you mean, Freak. Sigur Ros' sound is quite unique. Agaetis Byrjum sounds just heavenly. I always picture myself walking at night in a surrealistic and cold world (or maybe in Iceland) when listening to those guys.

Mogwai's "Happy Songs..." and Radiohead's "Kid A" come close to those feelings I get when listening to Agaetis Bryjum. All of them are rich in sound full of orchestrated passages, electronic textures and lovely drones and I love it!

^ We know. Nobody said they have the album. Jimbo just heard some samples of the album and he said they haven't progressed. Everyone is commenting on what he said. That's all.

Ah. I thought you were saying they didn't have any new material. :)

Well it's not too surprising. The Earth... was good, but it didn't sound like they really had anywhere else to go. But maybe I'm wrong.

Oddly enough. I gave one of my friend one song from Hosiana Mantra and he thought it was post-rock. It was until yesterday that he figured out that Popol Vuh was from the 70's and play krautrock. LOL

Here's a nice Godspeed You! Black Emperor live performance from 2002 in France. May take up a lot of space, but it's pretty good stuff. Happy Holidays!
