Hmm, your point is taken Roj, I may have to do a review or two.  Maybe I'll try to write something up for Space Revolver at lunch.  Guess what I'm listening to this morning.

PS:  Welcome to Page 11

I just love Just This Once, it's an amazing track and one of my very faves by TFK.  The Merrygoround was also mentioned and that is right up there.  It's my second favourite on the album (after SWA) and features my favourite ever Roine solo.  Wonderful stuff.

I know the feeling Roland113 and Angel mention.  The album (like most by this amazing band) just washes over you, and it's just an overall heavenly feeling, leaving you inspired, relaxed and with a completely positive vibe.

I can only agree that you hear new things each time you hear a TFK album.  For instance on this classic album The Man Who Walked With Kings went (almost) unnoticed by me for a time, but is now one of my favourites on the album.  It's brilliant!

I think we need a real concerted effort to review as many TFK albums as possible between us, and get those ratings up to the level where they deserve to be.

I try not to review the popular albums by the bands, but I might make some exceptions with TFK.

I did give Adam & Eve 4 starsWink

I'd like to enjoy flower kings music, but I can only manage that in small doses.

And I can tell you what disturbes me: It's the lack of melodies and the unremarkable singing, yes and I include the guest singers as well.

The playing, instrumentation, and production is brilliant, and I'd not change a thing there, but if you ask me, what the FKs need is a re-recording of the vocal tracks on ALL their albums, preferable sung by a female singer with strong melodies. Those songs would be ideal for vocal harmonies on well constructed chorus sections. Then I'd become a fanboy.

Nice review buddy Clap.

npjnpj - no melodies in Flower Kings music?!?  You've got to be joking.  I sure hear plenty of fabulous melodies from TFK, do you want to borrow my ears?

And by the way I love the vocals of TFK, Stolt, Froberg and Gildenlow.

In regard to melodies: What I actually mean is that strong melodies are supposed to sit on top of the accompaniment of the other instruments, often in counterpoint, practically having a life of their own.

This happens very seldom with the FKs. The melodies (especially Stolt is the culprit here) just seem to go in unison with the chord structures or the guitar lead with hardly a variation, and don't have a life of their own. He mainly seems to sing along with his guitar lines, and I find that very 'empty'  (and lazy) for want of better words.

npj,

I know what you mean, they do double the vocals over an instrument frequently.  "Stardust We Are" comes to mind as a prime example, though there are certainly enough examples of the opposite as you long for.  If you're interested, I'd recommend I am the Sun and Life Will Kill You as examples of the vocals taking a life of their own.

I do think of the vocals as one of their weaker points, both tone of the singing and in the lyrical content, though even so, I'd give the tone an eight out of ten and the content a six, both above average.

I disagree on the female singer part though unless you could find a breathy alto.  I think based on the music, it would be easiest to put a clean soprano in there but I don't think it would improve the sound.

Roj,

Thanks, as I'm thinking about a review for Stardust We are, I'm realizing that I really associate The Flower Kings with becoming a Dad, I hadn't realized that they were such a personal band for me.

Oh, and in case you've missed it, new Flower Kings poll, it's been up for half a day now and there have been no votes besides the one that I cast.

Where is the love for "The Garden of Dreams"?

Following some recent posts, I downloaded Stardust We Are a couple of weeks ago, which I had criminally neglected to buy. It's barely been off the MP3 player since. An incredible work, Church of Your Heart and the title track must rank as two of the most wondrous and beautiful pieces of music ever performed and written, in any genre.

Thanks to this site and forum, I am now a fully paid up member of TFK appreciation society, and will definitely be completing my collection with the missing LPs not in my collection.

An exceptional band who are giving me so much pleasure - so thanks to all who recommendedClapHug

Lazland,

Welcome to the land of all things Flower Kingish.  Glad we could help.  I agree with Stardust, for a while I was using in my alarm clock as my wake up song.  It was perfect, a gentle nudge towards the day...kind of like a 22 minute snooze alarm.  By the time we got to the end of the song, I was both fully awake and in a good mood.

So just out of curiosity, you said that you were planning on increasing your collection, what do you think you're going to get next?

Cheers Roland. Next will be Adam & Eve, as the successor to Unfold The Future, which I got some time ago. Through sheer laziness, I never really went further, even though I loved Stolt in Transatlantic.

However, winning the Karmakanic CD in the PA giveaway, and the threads on Stardust, has finally galvanised me into action. Damn glad tooBig smile

Any thoughts on Tomas Bodin's Cinematograaf?  I am listening to his other solo albums today, but I don't have this one yet.  Apparently it can only be purchased directly from him.

That's right, Scott. You will have to order at his home. Unfortunately I don't have his address Confused LOL.
He's a bit of a weirdo, Tomas but I love his music and I'm a lucky guy to have all his solo stuff. I also love his contributions in TFK. He's one the very best keyboardists ever imo.

About Cinematograaf: I will review it very soon and therefor will not reveal all my comments about it right now but I can safely say: if you have the opportunity: get it ! It's worth its money. There are three long songs on it, all somewhat different and surely different from what he did in the past.
By the way, I like all his solo albums. How about you ?

Another fan here. My first introduction to The Flower Kings was Space Revolver about two and a half years ago. I liked it, but at the time I wasn't that interested in progressive rock, so I didn't get anything else by them.

About a year and a half ago (yep, I'm still a bit new), I started to really fall for prog. As a blind purchase, I bought The Sum of no Evil and I fell in love. It's still my favourite The Flower Kings album. Stardust We Are, Space Revolver and the perhaps underrated Paradox Hotel aren't far behind though. Unfortunately, I don't have all their albums yet, but I have a hole open in my shelf for the missing pieces.

It was pretty great to see them a few months ago. My only gripe is that they didn't play A King's Prayer or The Sum of no Reason, but I guess you can't get everything Tongue

Hey welcome!

Damn you're lucky having seen TFK live! It must have been awesome!

Anyways, if you're looking for more from TFK or of the like, I highly recomend you SMPTe by Transatlantic.
Also Karmakanic's Who's The Boss in the Factory is excellent, then some from The Tangent, specially The World that We Drive Through.

Thanks. I've actually lurked these forums for so long that I didn't even remember if I had posted before.

The Tangent and Transatlantic are already two of my favourite bands. I actually found The Flower Kings through Transatlantic, who I found after becoming a fan of Spock's Beard. Who's the boss in the factory is on my shopping list. I've heard some songs from the album and I liked them a lot.

I'm still pretty new to progressive rock, but that doesn't mean I havent gotten familiar with some bands  Tongue
