Yes, the board is here to discuss prog rock, but I just find myself looking at some of these "is this prog" posts and being reminded of "Solve if u r genius" posts on Facebook et al. Perhaps I'm being a bit harsh, but some posts seem to be put up just for the sake of putting a post up.
Is Sergeant Pepper prog ? Well. I'm really not bothered, but it was a groundbreaking and stunningly good album, in it's day. I give it a spin every now and again and enjoy it. I'm not really worried if it's prog, progressive pop, psychedelia or whatever, to be honest. Music is art, people interpret art in different ways. One man's prog is another man's psychedelic pop.
I compose music, and I hardly ever think "I know, I'll sit down and write dark ambient" or whatever. It's just a label. I dislike labels, I tend to think labels are invented by record companies to shift product. I suppose I'm in the Frank Zappa camp there. If you want to musically dissect Sergeant Peppers and apply music theory to it to determine what it is or isn't, fine, but to do that with any credence you have to be a musician with vast experience of the genre. It's the usual Internet thing of someone having an opinion and voicing it without the background technical knowledge to back it up.
And it's art. You shouldn't define art by the means of science.
So, sorry, posts like this just irritate me. You've probably noticed: I am ancient and decrepit and curmudgeonly. That's my $0.02, but probably voiced in a more constructive manner than the post above, for which apologies. | THIS man I like! (Buys him a beer, clinks glasses) Cheers!

By 1971, 1972-ish, and for a little while thereabouts...
...prog(though no one called it this, yet)was pop!
Moggles the bind, doesn't it. The rind meals.
Could've but likely wouldn't've happened without Pepper.

Perhaps finding the happy medium is harder than we know.

More question bashing instead of answering the OP's question, which is all that required of any respondent to do when replying to this thread. Rest assured Peter that the moment that you post one of your inane questions or topics in PA, along with the other trolls in this thread, I will you treat you the same in my responses to your posts. I would tell you to just grow up, but that I know when I'm wasting my time with someone as selfish and juvenile as you. I hope that you're impressed with yourself, because you've had absolutely the opposite effect on me.

I'm not saying I thought it is but it's just I need to think about it.
but won't.. because it is pointless.... the prog v. progressive rabbit hole is a place that is very hard to escape if one heads down it.
eye of the beholder man... prog has as many definitions.. thus applications of such as we have people posting here.

^ And you should know better with a thread topic posted from a newbe micky. Instead of pointing out to the newbe OP that his tread topic is as old as the hills, has been debated numerous times and lacks a conclusion, you throw more gas on the fire. I'd welcome you back under a different circumstance, but I'm quite tired of this lack of common respect I've seen so far. As I've said, I'm not impressed.

which is probably the answer to this...
just because it is progressive doesn't mean it is prog
but the converse is sadly very true..
just because it is prog doesn't mean it is progressive...
The Beatles blew the lid off of music with Sgt Peppers.... prog quickly put a lid back on and quickly became a parody of itself..and a fully vested genre that had the touchstones that either made it prog.. or not. So much for being progressive... it found a formula and beat into the ground by the mid 70's... that more so than punk or disco killed it in its first incarnation IMO

you're too sweet Steve.
Here? Just dealing with some health issues that came from nowhere and bit me on the ass.... living too hard a life and perhaps the years of abuse catching up to me.... my doctor thinks they are stress related. Personally I think he is full of sh*t.. but as part of my stress management regimin... I sort of nearly completely withdrew from the internet. Started humming mantras and reading the Ramayana, trying to eat better, drink less, and clearing my head of all the crap going on the world haha.
Anyhow.. Raff was on this morning so I decided to pop in and see how everyone's doing and see if the site still had some life in it. Thanks to you and Peter for showing the fire is still there haha

I don't recall calling anyone any names, yet I am labelled juvenile, selfish and a troll. A stranger seems to hate me. That actually bothers me. I don't need this stress. People misunderstand and take responses so seriously, when all I intended to do is push an alternate view of how one views art. Anyway, I don't hate or even dislike anyone here (I don't know anyone here). Clearly, I am not cut out for forums. I am out of here. Goodbye.

I have to stick up for Peter here. On my texting thread(which turned into a total joke lol), he was nice to me. So I think there might be a misunderstanding here but I truly don't believe he's doing any question bashing at all. He's just not that kind of guy.

Good to see you Michael. There is that fine line between fun, relaxing, cathartic net chatting and stressful, circular nonsense. Nice to see you finding a balance.

Steve. The question requires bashing *because it is an inane question*. Think about it, please. That's the point I am, believe it or not, trying to make. You may like a forum full of "solve if u r genius" inane threads put up for the sake of merely putting a thread up. I've tried very hard to give a constructive and polite answer but you seem to be coming back with an attitude which suggests your haemorrhoids have had a Vesuvian scale flare up.
(See "I will treat you with the same responses" above.)
