Recommend me some VDGG

I've seen this band high on many people's lists of favorites...I wonder if I will like them, and is there a good album to start with? My taste in prog generally favors melodic over dissonant...Yes, ELP, Spock's Beard, Transatlantic, etc...

If your taste tends to the melodic definitely don't start with "Pawn Hearts". Try "Godbluff" instead. The voice, however, may still be to your dislike; Hammill's idea of singing is usually anything but melodic, though he can do that too. But he tends to put extreme emotions into his vocals, like fright, rage or despair, and these are best not shown by being very melodic; he screams, whispers, shouts and sometimes even sobs a lot. "House with no Door" from their album "H to He, Who AM the Only One" is a real heartbreaker; I love that song, but there is on e line in it that always puts tears into my eyes, especially due to the way Hammill delivers it. "I know my lines, I've learned them so well, I'm ready to tell whoever will finally come in of the line in my mind that's cold in the night, it doesn't seem right when there's that little dark figure running - won't somebody help me?"And my tears start rolling. No exaggeration.

If you like your music melodic, try VDGG second period. Both Godbluff and Still life are really good and melodic. Read my review of still life if you need some motivation on buying it. It is much easier to apreciate than Pawn Hearts. And better, hehe..

That's my favorite song on the album. 
I just love Banton's piano playing and the soft little organ at the end of the song.

Not sure if I agree with it being better than Pawn Hearts. But definitely more melodic, and I think the OP would be much better off with one of those two!

The least we can do is wave to eachothers, is the best one to start with i say. And after that yust get em all.

If you can stomach Pawn Hearts, you can stomach any of their albums haha
