Oliver, what is you opinion on the systems produced by Bang & Olufsen? I have my heart set on the BeoLab 5 speakers, but as yet am completely undecided on the other peripherals.
BeoLab 5 speaker - Amazing!
Are you familiar with their products, and how do you feel they compare to the other "high-end" systems currently on the market?

Please be aware however that I will only be able to finance such extravagant whims if I win the National Lottery or EuroMillions
14,000,000 to 1...I can live with those odds.

I don't know well this brand although i've already listened
to some of their 70's setups and was not impressed at all. This brand has a bad reputation among audiophile circles. Are these speaker's recent? But for sure, the electronics are bad. This is a brand which focus on the look, the cosmetic aspect, instead of the sound quality. |

Indeed, if B&O is high-end Hifi spectrum equipment, it is mostly in terms of design and price rather than quality. Real audiophiles don't even look at B&O, without a snicker of sarcasm.
B&O is strictly for nouveau riche or artsy fartsy interior design decorators and stuff.
BTW, another brand name getting frequently dissed is Bose by audiophiles. Expensive speakers and not able to suffer comparison from competition in pure sound comparison, and the price/performance ratio is almost laughably low.

until i heard a B&O system in the 70's i was using an extremely low-fi 12 wpc music centre, to hear something that decent was a revelation and from then on i became determined to follow the path to better sound, though i have never owned B&O they are still high in the public conciousness.

Yes the speakers are pretty new I think, I had a demonstration in a B&O outlet and they were part of a surround system. The whole thing cost £10,000, which sadly is several years worth of pay for me.
In that case I must be an "arty-farty" type, as I absolutely love their designs. Are there any websites that any of you are aware of that have comparison sections?

Don't trust magazines or sites, you'll be disapointed.
If you're just looking for a nice looking system, i can't help you (except that tube amps look terrific). Edited by oliverstoned - June 04 2007 at 14:53 |

We have a Bang & Olufsen television and it's great! It's a proper old '80s one with a huge remote control but it has yet to blow up like more modern televisons we've had.
Oh and we acquired it for free. Apparently the remote control costs £50 to replace! |

I'm with you on that - B&O make fantastic TVs - I would say that they and Loewe make the best TVs avavilable. The picture quality is in another class to any of the Japanese makes - you can forget Sony etc, they don't come close. And, yes, the remote does cost £50 to replace/re-furbish. I've had to do it twice.
Their Hi-Fi, in my experience, is not that "hi". It looks fantastic, always has done, but is anything but great in the sound stakes. Edited by Archer - June 12 2007 at 16:19 |

Yes, the picture quality is very good, I must say. The fact it didn't cost us anything is even better. I don't think the television is that expensive though, compaired to the remote control.
We're also talking '80s model here. It's outlasted most of our newer televisions. By the way, welcome to P.A.! Here's my model of B&O: The Beovision 7702 (without this VCR). Edited by Geck0 - June 12 2007 at 18:03 |

It's far superior to any plasma or LCD, but does it compete with the best Sony Trinitron?

If you're looking for top end quality, it has to be Linn. They may not be the most attractive looking pieces of kit, but they are unmatched for the sound they produce.

What are you talking about exactly? They do the best and the worst IMO. Classic products such as the Turntable Linn LP12, and CD players such as the Linn Ikemi or the big integrated CD12 (15 000€). |

...if you want a whole (solid state) system with electronics from the same brand, i prefer Naim over Linn.

At the time I bought my B&O TV it walked all over the best of Sony - it was like chalk and chese. That was a goof 8 years or so ago. I have no idea about how they would compare now. Althought I would still expect the B&O and Loewe to be better than any of the Japanese brands. Note I said "expect" - I admit things change.

You cannot make sweeping statements and generalise about manufacturers like that. All the top end (Linn included) make fantastic kit but not everything is of the same level across the portfolio. After all, they also still make items within given budget restrictions. There are lots of other excellent European brands who are all competing, and doing so at a high level. It is folly to state one is better all round than another.
The same high level can be seen in Quad, Linn, Audiolab, Naim, and a host of others. Edited by Archer - June 13 2007 at 08:46 |

Only my opinion, i don't like Linn most amplification/preamp whereas all what Naim does is good in high end: preamp, amp, CD...IMO.
Of course Naim solid state can't compete with tube, but it's good solidstate, always musical. |

I had a colleague who had an all Linn setup (CD based), including speakers. That was a very involving and sweet combo with plenty of punch and faithful reproduction of all ranges. It did lack a little excitement to my ears, but then I am simply used to a different sound palette. I certainly would not criticise it. Edited by Archer - June 13 2007 at 10:49 |

For once we are in agreement.. B&O kit was never very impessive to listen to but always rather quirky to look at. A triumph of design over function.
