Hello. I am a fan of prog/jazz rock in general but I have a specific request. I like to run while listening to music and I select very fast, very rhythmic tracks, preferably with long solos, with few quiet moments, mainly instrumental or with a minimum of lyrics, music that makes you want to push yourself... I am waiting for your recommendations! Here is a small selection of tracks already in my playlist to give you an idea : "Regret 9" by Steven Wilson / "Otto Pankrock" by Grobschnitt / "Bushnell Keeler" by Zopp / "Red Alert" by Tony Williams / "Flight Over Rio" by Al di Meola / "Lunar Sea" by Camel / Aurora Borealis" by Jukka Tolonen / "Hhai" by Magma / "The Tale of Taliesin" by Soft Machine... you get the idea ! Thanks

Try some Nova Collective for your runs. The Further Side is their only album, so far. Enjoy.

"Robot" by Hawkwind. that wild violin solo in the instrumental section of the track would squeeze the last bit of energy out of you to keep you running on when your body feels it can't run on anymore

Hi, Sorry to be contrary, but once when I
played tennis, I was able, many times, to reach a "second wind" that
allowed me to play better and stronger. There was no "music" ... the
only thing that was clear, was your inner ability to concentrate on the
ball ... and not even think about the last point, or your girlfriend, or
... I'm thirsty I need a drink. What makes the
great champions "great" is their level of concentration, and how far
they can take it ... I doubt, sincerely, that any music, specially
"progressive" can have a positive effect since the music itself is not
about you, and your ability to "assimilate" with it, AND is illusory,
and not real. I can see using it to relax
and make things "easier" on yourself, but, again, the nature of most
progressive music is not a good candidate to help you relax and improve
your game, or run. You might consider actual meditating music, but even
then, you will learn quicker yet, that it can become a distraction,
instead of it helping you concentrate on your ability and channel it to
the right places in your heart and body, to make things better. Anything else is an "excuse".

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told!

@moshkito Thank you for your opinion. I agree with you overall, music should be enjoyed for itself, not as a prop to do something else or think about something else.
However, I like running to music for several reasons. First of all, I don't run competitively or to excel, I run for fun and accompanying this sport with music that I love contributes to that pleasure. Selecting dynamic and rhythmic music is consistent with this sport. Then, the progressive music is for me an excellent companion for ruuning, its changes of rhythm, its particular atmospheres touch me and help me to hold the effort, I do not seek music to think of something else.

Thank you all for your recommendations! I especially enjoyed (and discovered) Mahogany Rush and Nova Collective... For Billy Cobham, I have "Quadrant 4" in my selection. For Hawkwind, I listen to "Spiral Galaxy 28948", I'm not too sensitive to the track "Robot".

I'm not much of a runner anymore, more of a cyclist, and I'd loathe to have music on my head/in my ears while doing sports outdoors: I very much like the musique concrète the outside world is offering (either natural or mechanical sounds), they are often very poetic whence you're open to it... That notwithstanding, this track might be interesting - a slow start, maybe, but after that you have to be careful not to fly out in one of those Dangerous Curves (King Crimson): |

Thank you for your King Crimson recommendation ! I run with "The Talking Drum" (from Night Watch). I would love to run to the sound of nature, but I live in an ultra-urban environment, with very little poetry to hear for my taste

Listening to music while running doesn't seem to differ all that much from listening to music while riding a bicycle. Because you are in motion the music accommodates your experience. On Bicycle I listened to Happy The Man. I liked Camel- Nude, Gong- You,Jan Hammer- Oh Yeah, Weather Report-Night Passage, Passport- Infinity Machine, Soft Machine-Seven, Hawkwind-Levitation, Billy Cobham-Crosswinds, Procol Harum-Grand Hotel, Tangerine Dream-Logos Live, Goblin-Suspiria, all good for biking .

On my running playlist I have Camel - Lunar Sea and Lady Fantasy / Jan Hammer - Red and Orange from Oh Yeah / Weather Report - Black Market / Passport - Abracadabra and Mandragora / Many Soft Machine tracks including Nettle Bed from Seven / Hawkwind - Spiral Galaxy 28948 / Billy Cobham - Quadrant 4...

I once saw a sports program on running back in the late 80s and the music playing was from Tangerine Dream's Exit album. I think the first track on side two. Regardless it was obvious it made for very good running music.

I ran for just over 10 years then packed it in but for me it was about enjoying nature and the trip as opposed to getting it done which is why I think I did it for so long. Some beautiful scenery here in cottage country.
I'm not going to be of any help here probably but personally I loved Electronic music and Post Rock when I ran. So soundscape music for the most part that served as background music to what my eyes were seeing.

I think this by Sanhedrin would fit the bill.
For me that motorik goove of Neu!s "Hallogallo" is great. The groove of Krautrock like Neu! and Can and those influenced by them can really work for me. I like to exercise to the following, but it being long and varied, it has parts that change your momentum. Despite the vocals and being pretty different from what I think you'd expect -- yeah, that can be really annoying when you ask for certain things and others are like, whatever, listen to this cause they love it and so think you should too -- Swans the Glowing Man from about 15 minutes in especially really gets me going. So I mentioned it anyway, which is a bit like saying, "I know I shouldn't say this..." and then going ahead and saying it anyway. Great track that you should like even if you don't, by the way. ;) Edited by Logan - June 02 2023 at 01:51 |
