The issue here is not Steve Howe and even if it was, who the hell wants to see Cinema play. I want to hear YES play and I want the guy that was part of that group and all the magic that was YES, not Trevor Rabin. YUK Confused

:) Yes with Rabin has the as huge magic as 70s Yes (though from different perspective, not only from that prog-snobbish). And in live version they will be surely better imo. Reunion of sort of Cinema is actually good idea, when Jon is not able to be part of it.

I can't agree that Rabin can ever be Steve Howe, sorry. If you want Cinema, well that's another matter.

He is not Howe, and that is the good thing, in lot of respects he is better than him. Steve isn't Yes (as much as I admire his work).
It is like you say Yes without Wakeman aren't Yes...Only Mabel Greer's Toyshop:). These thoughs shows quite short-sighted and close-minded side of Yes fans.

If you said that Yes without Wakeman and Howe both was only Mabel Greer's Toyshop, I would tend to agree with that statement.

There are three key members in YES and they include Howe, Anderson and Squire. You don't have The YES Album or Fragile or Close to the Edge or Tales or Relayer or Going for the One or Tormato or even Key Studio and Magnification for that matter. So, to say that Rabin can replace Howe is ridiculous. Ya, he can alright and you are left with the cheesy stuff that they did in the 80's and even drama with Steve Howe blows that stuff away.

If something is cheesy in Yes(-related) 80s stuff, it is Asia with Howe, and definitely not Yes with Rabin:) Yes of 80s with Howe could be probably very ridiculus if not disaster... thanks god Rabin saved their grace and brought them to that era such a breath of fresh air (funny that both key-members Anderson and Squire admire Trevor's work...they have to be foolish:)

I don't think the cheese factor in Asia came from Howe. I think it came from John Wetton. He's a total cheeseball. Howe, IMO, played some scorching guitar in Asia.

I think the cheese factor brought mainly that age (Wetton, though he leans to that, he's great on UK or KC...). GTR with Howe and Hackett is cheesy as well and even ABWH has hardly the magic of early Yes, though I quite like it. Yes managed with this factor in the great way in 80s.

Simple. I will acquire a Tardis/Time Machine and pop back to the 70s periodically, catching various gigs with all the classic line ups! And all this at 1970s prices too!!

1.  My scenario--it will still be a 40th anniversary tour next year, only it will be of the 1st album.  The tour will be limited due to health concerns and Howe's solo and Asia commitments.  If it's sufficiently limited, that could mean Rick could join up again. Smile

2. Sorry, the cheese factory proprietor is Mr. Downes--I mean, he's been the only constant. What else explains the John Payne era?

3. Regardless of where you come down on the Howe/Rabin comparison, without TR, Yes comes to a close in 1981. No Yes grammy, no four subsequent tours (until Steve's return).

1.) I could imagine Alan White, Chris Squire, Tony Kaye and Trevor Rabin doing a tour together under the band name Cinema. But they would have no legitimacy calling themselves Yes. They could perform songs from 90125, Big Generator, Union and Talk. I would go and see them if they came somewhere close to where I live and I would buy a live DVD if they released one.

2.) I could also imagine Chris Squire doing a solo tour with some low key musicians, performing songs from Fish Out Of Water as well as Yes songs and maybe a few songs from Conspiracy and The Syn. I would definately buy a live DVD if they did one.

3.) Steve will probably stay with Asia for longer than any one of us could have imagined. The four original members really seem to enjoy themselves now (judging from the Fantasia Live In Tokyo DVD). Also, if Yes never tours again, Asia is the best bet for Steve if he wants to play to major audiences in the future. Steve as a solo artist could never attract the kind of attention from fans and media that the original Asia can do. Further, the other three members of Asia are in similar situations. Neither one of them could attract large audiences on their own and their respective bands are very unlikey to ever reform (with them included). ELP are very unlikely to ever get back together; John Wetton re-joining King Crimson is very unlikely; Geoff Downs could reform the Payne-era line up of Asia but who would be interested? Conclusion: Asia is the only veicle for these four people if they want to be part of a major act in the future. And that must be a strong motivation for all of them to try to keep together. These are my thoughts anyway Embarrassed

A side note: some people here would like to see a Yes Drama tour. I don't think that is very likely. But given that 50% of Asia played on the Drama album, maybe Asia could play some songs from Drama in their set list in 2009? Not very likely I know and I doubt John Wetton would like to sing these songs, maybe just instrumental versions then? LOL

It's not Jon but if they stuck to Drama and a couple of less-played classics like Parallels I reckon they could pull it off.

I agree this would be quite interesting but it is extremely unlikely to happen. I really like GTR though and I think Max Bacon was a great singer for that band and he sure did a great live version of Roundabout. But I doubt they would go down very well performing as Yes.

I used to think that Asia was a very cheesy band and I never really liked their albums. But now when they are reunited in this century I love them! The recent live DVD Fantasia - Live In Tokyo made a believer out of me! It is a great DVD (see my review) and all the songs from the first Asia album sound much better live than they did on the studio album. They even play songs by Yes, King Crimson and ELP in the set list!!! Highly recommended!

I agree with Peskypesky that Howe played some scorching guitar in Asia, but it only truely comes forward on the recent live recording. I don't agree that John Wetton is a total cheeseball, maybe just a little bit LOL  BTW, Wetton also released a solo live DVD recently called Amorata that I think is great too (yeah, I love live DVDs Wink).

I can understand why someone would think GTR is a bit cheesy, but I have always loved GTR and found them to be a lot less cheesy than Asia and also a lot less cheesy than 90125 for that matter.

ABWH is not very cheesy at all, just great! Tongue

For me Steve Howe was never responsible for anything really cheesy!

Well, Downes has been the only constant full member of Asia through all it's incarnations but Howe played on several songs on the Aqua album and then again on Aura. He also appeared with them live on the Aqua tour I think. Carl Palmer also guested on some Payne era album if I'm not mistaken.

But you are probably right that Downes is responsible for a lot of the cheesyness in Asia, but all four members were doing it and they are still proud of what they did. Otherwise they wouldn't have reunited today and played all of those songs live again last year.

As I said in my last post I think Asia sounded cheesy on all of their studio albums, but the new live DVD doesn't sound that cheesy at all to me. Well, maybe a little bit but not in a bad way Confused. They look like they are having fun and they sound great! Shocked

Did I kill this topic by posting too many replies in a row? If I did, I surely will not make it any better by quoting myself, but what the heck... I listened to 90125, Big Generator, Union and Talk today and I came up with this suggestion for a set list for this imagined band "Cinema". This is certainly not my favourite era of Yes and my suggested set list is not necessarily my favourite songs from that era (if it was then OOALH would not be there!). Rather it is what I think is a reasonably realistic set list if this band would ever tour.

Setlist:

01. Cinema (Chris Squire/Trevor Rabin/Alan White/Tony Kaye)
02. Leave It (Chris Squire/Trevor Rabin/Trevor Horn)
03. Hold On (Trevor Rabin/Jon Anderson/Chris Squire)
04. Lift Me Up (Trevor Rabin/Chris Squire)
05. It Can Happen (Chris Squire/Jon Anderson/Trevor Rabin)
06. Miracle Of Life (Trevor Rabin/Mark Mancina)
07. SI (Tony Kaye)
08. Changes (Trevor Rabin/Jon Anderson/Alan White)
09. It's Over (Trevor Rabin?)
10. Solly's Beard (Trevor Rabin)
11. Shoot High Aim Low (Alan White/Tony Kaye/Trevor Rabin/Jon Anderson/Chris Squire)
12. .../Whitefish (Chris Squire/Alan White)/Amazing Grace (Traditional)
13. Saving My Heart (Trevor Rabin)
14. Love Will Find A Way (Trevor Rabin)
-- First encore:
15. Endless Dream (Trevor Rabin/Jon Anderson)
-- Second encore:
16. Rhythm Of Love (Tony Kaye/Trevor Rabin/Jon Anderson/Chris Squire)
17. Make It Easy (Trevor Rabin?)
18. Owner Of A Lonely Heart (Trevor Rabin/Jon Anderson/Chris Squire/Trevor Horn)

What do you think?
