Anybody listen to Steely Dan?
I think they're pretty great, especially on their first two albums. |

I love the 'studio/session' era when only the best in the music business played on their albums and even then.... Fagen and Becker would put them through 20 takes to perfect every single damn song hahhahha. Consider me a huge fan. Got Aja as a kid by mistake from Columbia House when I forget to send the frickin card in and it was the selection of the month. Loved it and have been a fan ever since. Still have that LP, scratched as hell as it is |

Huge Steely Dan fan. Favorite discs are Aja, The Royal Scam, and Gaucho. Katy Lied is good, too.
Classic Albums featuring Aja is extremely interesting. I highly recommend it. E |

I've been introducing Raff to Steely Dan. So far, a BIG thumbs up for The Royal Scam , not so thumbs up for Gaucho , and she liked Katy Lied. Aja is next up... |

I love the Dan. Can't Buy a Thrill and Aja are my favorites, but Pretzel Logic and and Katy Lied are awesome as well. I practically grew up listening to them, but it wasn't until a few years ago I took to listening to them on my own accord. I got to see them on tour last summer, which was pretty much awesome.

I think Gaucho gets a lot of criticism. It's actually been a while since I've listened to it, but this album was a transition to a more restrained sound. It's still one of my favorites (and Bernard Purdie's shuffle groove on "Babylon Sisters" is perfection), but I would take Royal Scam or Aja over it any day. E |

The Dans are fantastic. I didn't think they fit in here but in light of some of the other "prog related" bands I've noticed listed here I'm beginning to think that they belong. You'll get no argument from me!

I'm a huge fan. Aja, Gaucho, The Royal Scam, Pretzel Logic and Countdown to Ecstasy are great releases. These are the ones I know best.
I agree with E - Dub, the making of 'Aja' DVD is essential for fans and Bernard's grooves are just A1. Also, imho, the 'Two Against Nature ' DVD is one of the best recorded and tight live sounds you are ever going to hear with second to none musicianship as we have come to expect. The 'Two Against Nature' songs are great and some of the older tunes reworked like 'Bad Sneakers', 'Pretzel Logic', 'Black Friday' and 'Gaucho' are fantastic. 'Green Onions' and 'Kid Charlemane' aren't half bad either. Only criticism, John Herrington's lead guitar breaks are not prominent enough in the mix . Great drumming from Ricky Lawson for those rhythm section enthusiasts. Seeing them in Brisbane, Australia on 16/9. As I have lamented on other threads, because I live in the tropics I only have to travel 1500 k to see them, but who's counting! ! ! |

^^^ LIVE IN AMERICA is great album too, as the first 'official' Steely Dan live album. |

Agreed. I think it was Dennis Chambers on drums for that tour - they certainly use some great drummers. Keith Carlock is coming to Aus. with them . I am not so familiar with him. Does anyone know much about him? I know he's been on some more recent studio albums.

I was huge Steely Dan fan over 10 years ago when i got tired of 1990's grunge and metal movement. At the same time i discovered wonderful world of Tom Waits. For some reason only Tom Waits has remained in my repeated listens. Maybe it is time to put Steely Dan back. Their music is pure genious, perfect mix of jazz, funk, soul and modern rock.

A great band! My favourite album by them is Aja.
The 2 albums they made since reforming are not bad but don't match their 70's output IMO.

Steely Dan has produced some of my favorite non-Prog music. I would say the title to Aja is a Prog song! I love the funk-rock that Steely Dan produces.

An incredibly inventive and unique band. Saw them in concert last year and they were fantastic. They never made a bad album.

I believe a NYC based drummer, better known in jazz rock circles for working/recording with Wayne Krantz - who himself has been a SD's touring guitarist . Check out Wayne Krantz's own website (www.waynekrantz.com) if you want to follow up on Carlock on record, e.g. the most excellent May 2007 releaseYour Basic Live 06, and the earlier recordings:Your Basic Live, Greenwich Mean - these are all recorded live. Btw Krantz does his own direct selling of records to fans and I've found his signature on the custom's declaration forms that have been stuck to the packages sent with the CDs! |
