Topic: Thick as a brick vs Passion play Posted: September 22 2009 at 19:16 |
Both these albums were released by Ian Anderson and company. Both were released back-to-back. Both are concept albums. And both have just one long piece--a radio programmer's nightmare! And yes, both of them are prog!
Which do you prefer?
I love both equally. But I give THICK AS A BRICK a slight nod due to its brillient Monty Python-esque newspaper parody cover.

I'm a fan of Thick as a Brick, but I am afraid to say that I have not heard Passion Play.

While I adore Thick as a Brick, I now much prefer A Passion Play. The latter is more coherent musically (though I would not have said so a year ago).

It's quite similar, except that synthesizers were employed for the first time. Also, it's a bit more "prog" than THICK.

That's what I was thinking! Anyway, I took the cowards way out this time and voted for BOTH of them since I had the opportunity. Both are great - yet - different. I agree with Epignosis that A Passion Play is actually more coherent overall. It is its unusual sound that makes it seem otherwise.

TAAB is one of the finest albums ever made. APP one of the worst. So you know where my vote went.

Can you tell me where we're headin'?
Lincoln County Road or Armageddon.

The last TaaB-APP poll was launched on August 27, 2009 by Phideaux.
My opinion has not changed dureing the last 27 days. I vote for Thick as a Brick. I find A Passion Play harder to get into and to me it seems less coherent, although it has some very fine moments.

My vote goes to APP by a "hare." TAAB makes me want to march off to war, for some reason. APP makes me want to ponder the beauty of not knowing.

Option No. 3.
I'm not exactly the world's biggest Tull fan, but I won't deny that TAAB and APP are great albums and their best (maybe because they are also their proggiest.)

I voted for A Passion Play, because I love it. Actually I don't like Thick as a Brick so much, though it's a masterpiece. But I like the version in The 25th Anniversary Boxed Set (Disc 3, The Beacons Bottom Tapes) (1993). The length is 9.01, and the music is very thick, coherent. It is a true masterpiece! But I assume we were not voting about that version. Maybe I should put up a poll. I'll do that. Here, TaaB vs TaaB: http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=65448 Everyone should get that version.Edit: oops, the poll was about albums. I don't know about that, haha ;D
